Fosamax Plus D Information

Fosamax Plus D (alendronate and cholecalciferol) is a medication used to treat (and prevent) patients with osteoporosis. Fosamax Plus D belongs to the class of medication called bisphosphonates, which works by altering bone formation and breakdown in the body. This can slow bone loss and may also help prevent bone fractures. This medication is also a form of vitamin D which is important for the absorption of calcium from the stomach, and for calcium function in the body.

Fosamax Plus D Side Effects

Common side effects of Fosamax Plus D include:
• Constipation;
• Diarrhea;
• Headache;
• Heartburn;
• Nausea;
• Pain in your bones, joints, or muscles;
• Stomach area (abdominal Pain);
• Upset stomach

Contact your doctor immediately if any of these adverse effects occur:
• Chest pain, new or worsening heartburn;
• Jaw pain, numbness or swelling;
• New or unusual pain in your thigh or hip;
• Pain or difficulty when swallowing;
• Pain or burning under the ribs or in the back;
• Severe joint, bone, or muscle pain

Fosamax Plus D Precautions

Do not take this medication if you are allergic to it or any of its ingredients. Inform your doctor of any other medications you take including prescription medication, over the counter drugs, vitamins and herbal supplements, to avoid any negative interactions between drugs. Inform your doctor if you take:

• Aspirin or other NSAID’s (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs);
• Celecoxib;
• Diclofenac;
• Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin);
• Indomethacin;
• Meloxicam;
• Naproxen (Aleve)

Do not take Fosamax Plus D if you have hypocalcemia (low levels of calcium in your blood) or if you have problems with the movement of muscles in your esophagus. Do not take this medication if you are unable to sit upright or stand for 30 minutes post taking the medication, as this may cause serious issues in the stomach or esophagus. Inform your doctor of your previous medical history or if you have:
• Cancer such as Sarcoidosis, Leukemia, Lymphoma;
• Kidney disease;
• Low blood calcium;
• Ulcer in your stomach or esophagus;
• Vitamin D deficiency

It is unknown if this medication will harm an unborn child, thus speak with your doctor if you are or plan to get pregnant during the duration of this medication. It is unknown if Fosamax Plus D will pass into breast milk and harm a nursing child, speak with your doctor before breast feeding your child.
