Histantil Information

Histantil (Promethazine HCl) is used to prevent and treat nausea and vomiting related to certain conditions such as before or after surgery, motion sickness. It may be used to help you feel sleepy or relaxed before and after surgery or to help certain opioid pain relievers (such as meperidine) work better. It is also used to treat allergy symptoms such as rash, itching, and runny nose both due to allergy and common cold. Promethazine is an antihistamine and works by blocking a certain natural substance (histamine) that your body makes during an allergic reaction. Its other effects (such as anti-nausea, calming, pain relief) may work by affecting other natural substances and by acting directly on certain parts of the brain. Do not use this product to treat cold symptoms in children younger than 6 years unless specifically directed by the doctor. To decrease the risk for serious side effects, carefully follow all dosage directions.

Histantil Side Effects

The most common side effect of Histantil may include drowsiness, dizziness; constipation; blurred vision; dry mouth. Call your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Difficulty urinating;
• Easy bleeding/bruising;
• Fainting;
• Mental/mood changes (such as hallucinations, nervousness, irritability, restlessness, confusion);
• Slow heartbeat;
• Shaking (tremor);
• Signs of infection (such as fever, persistent sore throat);
• Severe stomach pain, persistent nausea, yellowing eyes or skin;
• Unusual or uncontrolled movements (such as fixed upward stare, neck twisting, tongue movements).

Histantil Precautions

Do not use Histantil tablets if you are allergic to Promethazine HCl or to any other ingredients in this medication. Before you start taking this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history especially of breathing problems (such as asthma, COPD, sleep apnea), blood or immune system problems, high pressure in the eye (glaucoma), heart disease, high blood pressure, liver disease, certain brain disorders, stomach or intestine problems, overactive thyroid, difficulty urinating (for example, due to enlarged prostate). Tell your doctor about all the medications you take including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Histantil and other medications. This drug may make you dizzy or drowsy or blur your vision. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs alertness or clear vision until you can do it safely. Avoid alcoholic beverages while taking this medication.
