Salofalk Enema Precautions

Do not use Salofalk enema if allergic to Mesalamine/5-aminosalicylic acid or other ingredients in this medication. Before you start using this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history, including if you have serious liver or kidney disease, have bronchial asthma, think you may be pregnant or plan to become pregnant, are breastfeeding, or are planning to breastfeed. Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Salofalk enema and other medications, like warfarin, azathioprine, cyclosporine, digoxin, and aldesleukin. Do not use Salofalk enema if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant without informing your doctor. This drug should only be used in pregnancy if the benefits outweigh the risks. Do not use Salofalk enema while breastfeeding without talking to your doctor. Mesalamine passes into your breastmilk, and it may cause diarrhea in nursing infants. It is not known if this drug is safe for use in children below 12 years of age. Use your medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Salofalk enemas are to be used rectally. You must insert it through your anus. Do not take the drug by mouth. Use one enema daily at bedtime. If possible, go to the toilet and empty your bowels before using the enema.

Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. Use a pair of scissors to cut along the dotted line of the pack containing the enema bottle. Lie down on your left side, stretch your left leg, and bend your right leg. Gently guide the applicator deep into your rectum. Remove the applicator when the bottle is empty. Remain lying down for at least 30 minutes to allow the enema to spread through the lower oaty of the large intestine. Wash your hands thoroughly. Do not try to empty your bowels again until the following day. You may experience a feeling of urgency to empty your bowels immediately after administering the enema. Resist the urge for as long as possible. This feeling will subside as you continue your treatment. Keep Salofalk enemas in their original product pack until it is time to use them. Store this medication at room temperature and keep it out of the reach of children.
