Urso (Generic name: Ursodiol, Ursodeoxycholic Acid) is a prescribed medication used for the treatment of cholestatic liver disease. Ursodiol is a bile acid. It works by decreasing the amount of cholesterol produced by the liver and absorbed by the intestines. Ursodiol helps break down cholesterol that has formed into stones in the gallbladder. Urso is used to treat small gallstones in people who cannot have gallbladder surgery, and to prevent gallstones in overweight patients who are losing weight rapidly, and to treat a certain type of liver disease (primary biliary cirrhosis, PBC). Take Urso exactly as it was prescribed for you.
The most common Urso side effects are back pain, diarrhea, dizziness, flu symptoms, headache, nausea, stomach upset, or vomiting. If you are experiencing any severe side effects such as chest pain, depression, fever, muscle pain, nervousness, urination problem, vision changes, or signs of allergic reactions (e.g., difficult breathing; itching; rash; swelling), please inform your doctor immediately.
