Victrelis (Generic name: Boceprevir) is an antiviral medication used to treat hepatitis C. Victrelis is used with other hepatitis C medications such as peginterferon and ribivirin. Do not take Victrelis by itself. Victrelis works by binding viral cells and preventing certain virus cells from multiplying in your body. Boceprevir is often used for a new hepatitis C infection, but has also been found to help cure recurrent hepatitis C (cured meaning no virus in the blood 6 months after treatment), after interferon and ribivirin have already been tried.
Victrelis Side Effects:The most common Victrelis side effects are diarrhea, insomnia, feeling weak, tired or irritable, nausea, loss of appetite or vomiting, dry skin, hair loss, joint pain, altered sense of taste, or mild skin rash. If you are experiencing any severe side effects such as pale skin, feeling lightheaded or short of breath, rapid heart rate, trouble concentrating, fever, chills, body aches, flu symptoms or sores in your mouth or throat, or symptoms of a serious allergic reaction (e.g., difficult breathing; hives; itching; swelling), please inform your doctor immediately.
Victrelis Precautions: Do not take Victrelis if you are allergic to boceprevir. Before taking Victrelis, tell your doctor if you have hepatitis B or cirrhosis of the liver. Tell your doctor every medication you are taking. There are many drugs that should not be taken while you are taking Victrelis. Some examples are: alfuzosin, cisapride, drospirenone, pimozide, lovastatin or simvastatin, sildenafil and St. John's Wort. This is not a complete list, be sure to talk to your doctor about drug interactions before taking Victrelis. Hormonal birth control such as birth control pills or patches may not be as effective while taking Victrelis. Be sure to use a non-hormonal form of birth control such as condoms or an intrauterine device (IUD) if you are sexually active. Tell your doctor if you or your sexual partner becomes pregnant while you are taking Victrelis. Victrelis is given together with interferon alfa and ribavirin. Although Victrelis is not expected to harm an unborn baby, ribavirin is known to cause birth defects or death in an unborn baby. Do not use this combination of drugs if you are pregnant, or if you are a man and your sexual partner is pregnant. If you are a woman, you may need to have a negative pregnancy test before using these medications and every month during your treatment. It is not known whether boceprevir passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. You should not breast-feed while you are using Victrelis.
