New Source of Stem Cells — Women’s Ovaries

Monday, February 27th, 2012

Mexico stem cell therapy

Medical practitioners and patients alike have long believed that a woman has a finite number of eggs in her ovaries. However, new research is stating that it may be possible to create more. According to the study, run by Harvard University researchers, young women may be producing stem cells in their ovaries. These stem cells can be taken out and potentially used to make eggs. Stem cells are “template cells” – that is, they are cells that will eventually grow into other, useful cells, by the body. Stem cells are most often found in the umbilical cord. The discovery of ovarian stem cells is a particularly important finding for those who have been unable to produce eggs on their own due to disease or simply aging.

After partnering with Japan’s Saitama Medical University, the scientists extracted ovarian stem cells from ovaries donated for research. In order to prove that the process was working, the scientists extracted a protein that is believed to sit only on the stem cells, and added a gene that makes some jellyfish glow green. If the stem cells produced egg cells, those should glow green as well. Researchers then injected the stem cells into human ovarian tissue, and placed them under the skin of a mouse for a steady stream of nutrition. Within two weeks, the stem cells had started forming glowing green reproductive cells.

More research is needed, particularly to prove that these amazing findings can be repeated in another laboratory. It will be years until this research can be formed into a viable fertility treatment, but it brings hope to those who may have to undergo chemotherapy or radiation, losing their eggs, or undergo oophorectomies, preventing the growth of any eggs.

Lessening of Cancer Drug Shortages in the US

Thursday, February 23rd, 2012

from Science Photo Library

In order to help to ease the cancer drug shortages in the United States, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recently approved the production of cancer medications Doxil and preservative-free methotrexate at new plants. This will significantly ease the burden currently placed on doctors and cancer patients.

Doxil is an important factor in the treatment of ovarian and other cancers, and has been unavailable for new patients in months. Preservative-free methotrexate is used for a type of childhood leukemia and for high-dose treatment of bone cancer. Since 2008, methortrexate has been unable to be obtained with any certainty, and with a sudden closure of a manufacturer, doctors and patients were worried that the supply wouldn’t last through this month. The methotrexate that was available on the market contained preservatives, which had been seen to cause paralysis in children and other patients receiving high doses. Luckily, Canada has not been affected by the shortage, and cancer patients can buy Rheumatrex and Doxil online.

Although there have been shortages of many other medications, the sharpest decline has been in injectable medications, which are commonly used in hospitals, but do not create large profits for pharmaceutical companies. These drugs are one of the strongest weapons against cancer recurrence though, and a sudden inability to provide their patients with these necessary medications worried many doctors. At least 15 deaths since 2010 have been attributed to the cancer drug shortage. A sudden lack of medicine often significantly reduces a patient’s chance of surviving cancer.

FDA Warns About Counterfeit Avastin

Thursday, February 16th, 2012

The FDA is warning doctors and patients about a batch of counterfeit Avastin that has been accidentally purchased and used by 19 different clinics across the country. The counterfeit version is very similar to Roche Pharmaceuticals’ Avastin, but is missing the essential medicinal ingredient, bevacizumab. This may result in cancer patients not receiving the treatment as needed.

Counterfeit Avastin is labeled with “Roche Pharmaceuticals” and batch numbers starting with B6010, B6011 or B86017. The only Avastin that is FDA-approved for distribution in the United States is distributed by Genentech, which is a member company of Roche.

Avastin is an injectable cancer treatment typically administered in hospitals, doctors’ offices and clinics. Doctors may order from a local supplier instead of directly from the manufacturer, which can lead to counterfeit products being used. In order to avoid this, talk to your doctor about your treatment options. Your doctor may suggest that you buy Afinitor or try other cancer medications.

Big Mountain Drugs Provides Free Coupons in Response to Cancer Drug Shortage

Tuesday, February 14th, 2012

oncology drugs in the pharmacy from ozgurmulazimoglu

Big Mountain Drugs, a leading Canadian online pharmacy, has partnered with BreastCancerCare.us to release a new coupon specifically for cancer patients. With a purchase over $100, customers buying cancer medications will have $25 taken off of their purchase. The code, feb25, can be used with both online purchases and through called-in orders. With the recent shortages of cancer medications such as Femara and Gleevec in the United States, Big Mountain Drugs is encouraging patients, doctors, and hospital staff to buy from a Canadian online pharmacy to provide for their cancer therapy needs.

In the last year, the FDA has released reports detailing the shortage or complete disappearance of important cancer medications. These shortages are causing potentially life-threatening treatment delays for cancer patients. These shortages are caused by many factors, one of them being the introduction of generic alternatives. For example, many cancer patients are choosing generic Gleevec or generic Femara instead of the pricier brand name version. Since the pharmacy companies no longer hold the only patent, they make significantly less profit on the medications, and may choose to discontinue them. Other reasons for the medication shortage include manufacturing problems, or late deliveries of materials necessary for production.

Cancer was the number two killer of Americans in 2011. According to the American Cancer Society, approximately 1.5 million people were diagnosed with cancer in 2011. Over 500,000 cancer patients died last year. How many of these could have been prevented?

Although almost 80% of people diagnosed with cancer are over the age of 55, this terrible disease can affect anyone. Effective and timely treatment is essential to a patient’s survival. Big Mountain Drugs is responding to this need by offering a significant discount for all cancer medications, including chemotherapy and hormone therapy drugs. Anyone with a prescription can now buy Zytiga and Tarceva.

Big Mountain Drugs, an online pharmacy based out of Vancouver, British Columbia, offers certified Canadian pharmacy care at lowered prices. Their mission is to provide safe and reliable medications to their customers. Big Mountain Drugs offers well-known brand-name and generic medications such as Afinitor, Femara, thalidomide and tamoxifen. Big Mountain Drugs specializes in speedy, secure prescription deliveries, so you can buy Gleevec with confidence. They accept prescription and over the counter orders through fax, online orders, and over the phone. The Canadian online pharmacy is proud to offer their telephone service in multiple languages. Big Mountain Drugs is certified by PharmacyChecker.com, and is a member of the Canadian International Pharmacy Association (CIPA).

More Precision in Prostate Cancer Treatment

Monday, February 13th, 2012

Prostate cancer is a disease few want to talk about. Due to its location in the body, it is often difficult to treat. However, with a new radiation therapy called Calypso, the stigmas associated with prostate cancer may be reduced. In the past, radiation directed at the cancerous prostate has affected the surrounding organs, causing unpleasant sexual or gastrointestinal side effects.

The Calypso is a GPS tracking system used by doctors to specifically pinpoint prostate location at the time of radiation. The prostate often changes locations depending on the fullness of the bladder or rectum. With the Calypso, three tiny transponders are placed within the prostate at the beginning of the patients’ cancer treatment. This allows the doctors to pinpoint the prostate’s location in real time. Knowing exactly where the prostate is for treatment allows the doctors to irradiate only the affected areas of the prostate, eliminating the radiation that affects the surrounding organs. This has been shown to significantly reduce radiation therapy’s uncomfortable side effects. So far, the treatment has been used on 6,000 American men.

Colchicine for Cancer Treatment

Friday, February 3rd, 2012

The University of Bradford’s Institute of Cancer Therapeutics is developing a new drug designed to target only diseased cancerous cells. One of the main ingredients in the team’s experimental drug is colchicine, which is commonly used to treat gout. Although colchicine is a natural ingredient often derived from the Autumn Crocus, the scientists are creating a chemically matched substitute in a laboratory.

This new form of colchicine was created as a first attempt to remove the existing blood supply to a tumor. Without a blood supply to sustain its cell reproduction, the tumor should die off. Scientists have tailored the drug to specifically target an enzyme only found in diseased tissue. this means the drug will also be able to target secondary tumor cells.

According to the lead researcher on the team, this drug will be particularly powerful as it should be able to safely work alongside the patients’ chemotherapy treatments or hormone therapies such as Femara or Arimidex.

New Technology Speeds Up Diagnosis of Cancers and other Conditions

Friday, January 27th, 2012

developed by Dr. Shana Kelley

Doctors may be able to diagnose many different conditions using a new handheld device. Using a blood sample or swab, doctors simply insert the sample into the device and it can search for anything from cancer to tuberculosis. The device is designed to search for specific cells that are found in these conditions.

Dr. Shelley Kana of the University of Toronto says they have been working on this new technology for almost a decade. The device looks like a smartphone placed on top of a large battery. The screen shows the cells’ data and the bottom reads the sample.

This new device could save the health care system millions in dollars and man hours, and will also save patients from lengthy and often uncomfortable tests such as biopsies. Biopsies are used to determine whether a tumor is cancerous or not. They are done by withdrawing cells from the tumor using a large needle. Patients will be happy to know that with this will be needed much less often with this technology. Now only a blood sample will need to be played on a microchip, and they may have answer within minutes.

Drug Dutasteride May Slow Prostate Cancer Process

Wednesday, January 25th, 2012

Avodart 0.5 mg

Avodart (dutasteride), a widely prescribed drug to treat enlarged prostate may also slow the progression of early stage prostate cancers in men, according to a study published online Monday in the Lancet.

In a three-year study, prostate cancer progressed in 38 percent of 144 men were treated with Avodart in early stage of prostate cancer and 48 percent of the 145 men who received a placebo. In addition, men were studied for anxiety related to prostate cancer and prostate cancer treatment. The results also showed men with Avodart seem less anxious about the cancer diagnosis.

It’s very good news for men who have low-risk prostate cancer because aggressive treatment, such as surgery and radiation, “can have a major impact on their quality of life, with risks of impotence and incontinence,” said Dr. Neil Fleshner, head of the urology division at Toronto’s University Health Nework (UHN), who led the study.

A British doctor also commented the study duration was very short compared with the natural history of prostate cancer. Long-term outcomes remain unknown.

The Canadian Cancer Society estimates 25,000 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed this year and that 4,100 men will diet from this disease. Many of these cases are considered as low grade disease.

The drug, dutasteride, works by lowering a hormone called DHT (dihydrotestosterone) that is the main cause of prostate enlargement in men. The most common side effects are erectile dysfunction or impotence, decreased libido, breast enlargement or tenderness. Buy Avodart online from leading Canada pharmacy Big Mountain Drugs, a valid prescription is required.

The Bodies of Summer – Why Take Vitamin D?

Wednesday, January 18th, 2012

Liquid Sunshine

We all hear about how good the sun is for us, how people are often happier in the summer, due to longer days, and more time to soak up vitamin D. Low levels of vitamin D have been linked to higher risk of depression, osteoporosis, higher risk of breast cancer, even Parkinson’s and heart disease. We notice that colds and flus are worse in the winter, when there is less sunlight for us to bask in; it’s called flu season for a reason. Many of us agree there is nothing like turning your face up to a bright sunny morning- but what does vitamin D really do? Does the “sunshine vitamin” affect more than just our mood?

New research is saying yes. According to research presented at the San Antonio Cancer Symposium, studies have discovered that high levels of vitamin D can be linked to smaller tumor sizes in breast cancer patients. “Lower vitamin D levels were correlated with much bigger tumors” said Dr. Barbara Brouwers of Belgium. Patients who were clearly vitamin D deficient had a stronger risk of relapse within three years. She also stated that vitamin D levels are important in many chronic illnesses, and some studies have shown these low levels of vitamin D to be a predictor of both breast cancer risk, and the disease’s eventual outcome.

But what does the “sunshine vitamin” do for the average woman?

In London, a coroner has suggested that all pregnant and breastfeeding women should be prescribed vitamin D after a three month old boy died from a viral infection. The coroner stated that the progression of the virus was aided by his vitamin D deficiency. He believes that all of us, especially women, should be more aware of the dangers of vitamin D deficiency.

According to the Vitamin D Society, around 1 billion people worldwide are deficient in this important vitamin. Although sunny climates provide this much-needed vitamin, those of who don’t live in the tropics need to find another way to get our daily dose of “sunshine.” Few foods contain large amounts of vitamin D, but it can be found in cod liver oil, fatty fish such as salmon, butter, eggs, and liver. However, health-conscious people buy Vitamin D to add to their daily vitamins; to be sure they are receiving their daily intake. Osteoporosis Canada suggests the average person take in about 1000 IU per day, whereas a breastfeeding woman should take in about 60 IU per day, as taking too much may negatively affect her breast milk. As the coroner suggested, pregnant and nursing women should be prescribed vitamin D, particularly those with dark skin, as their bodies have a harder time producing this important vitamin. The rest of us should remember to take our daily vitamins, and enjoy the sunshine!
