Alka-Seltzer is a salicylate, or a salt of salicylic acid, that can be used to treat a number of issues, including minor aches, pains, inflammation, fever, headache, indigestion, acid reflux, and hangovers. Alka-Seltzer is a combination of aspirin, sodium bicarbonate, and citric acid. The aspirin acts as a pain-reliever and anti-inflammatory, the sodium bicarbonate is an antacid, and the citric acid reacts with the water to form effervescence. This combination medication works by lowering the amount of acid in the stomach. Do not take Alka-Seltzer if you have an allergy to aspirin, citric acid, or sodium bicarbonate. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any signs of overdose, including severe drowsiness, fast or deep breathing, loss of hearing, bloody urine, convulsions, severe dizziness, or severe vomiting and nausea.
