Niaspan Information:

Niaspan (Generic name: Niacin Extended Release) is an approved cholesterol medication used to treat high cholesterol. Niaspan contains an active ingredient Niacin that works by decreasing the production of cholesterol in the body. Niacin helps to lower total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol (bad cholesterol) and triglycerides, and raises HDL-cholesterol (good cholesterol). Lowering your cholesterol can help prevent heart disease, angina (chest pain), stroke, and vascular disease. Niaspan extended release should be used in combination with an appropriate diet and exercise program to reduce cholesterol. Take Niaspan ER exactly as it was prescribed for you.

Niaspan Side Effects:

The most common Niaspan side effects are abdominal pain, diarrhea, dizziness, flushing, gas, headache, insomnia, itching or dry skin, muscle pain, nausea, sweating and vomiting. If you are experiencing any severe side effects such as chest pain, fainting, joint pain, migraine, signs of liver problem (e.g., yellow eyes or skin, dark urine), stomach bleeding and serious allergic reaction (e.g., rash, hives, difficult breathing, swelling of the lips, throat or tongue), please inform your doctor immediately.

Niaspan Precautions:

Do NOT take Niaspan oral if you are allergic to Niacin or any of the ingredients in Niaspan medication. Do NOT take Niaspan ER if you are pregnant or breast-feeding. Before taking Niaspan, tell your doctor if you have had any medical conditions such as bleeding disorder, diabetes, gallbladder disease, gout, heart problem, muscle disorder, renal disease, stomach ulcers, liver or kidney disease. Tell your doctor about all the prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) medications you use. They may interact with Niaspan drug, especially of: anti-diabetes, ASA, blood thinner (e.g., warfarin), blood pressure, cholestyramine, colestipol, heart medications, nitrates, multivitamins or supplements that contain niacin, and statin cholesterol medications.
