Alrex (Loteprednol Etabonate Ophthalmic Suspension 0.2%) is predominantly used for the temporary relief of signs and symptoms of seasonal allergic conjunctivitis, such as eye itching, redness, and watery eyes. Loteprednol Etabonate may also be used in the short-term treatment of signs and symptoms of dry eye disease, such as dry eyes, gritty sensation in the eyes, and eye discomfort. It may also be used for the treatment of pain and other symptoms of inflammation in the eyes following an eye surgery. Alrex, which contains the active ingredient loteprednol etabonate, is an ophthalmic drug that belongs to the corticosteroid class. When these allergens come in contact with the eye, the immune system overreacts, releasing inflammatory substances that cause the classic symptoms of redness, itching, and swelling. As a corticosteroid, loteprednol works by acting on the cellular level to inhibit the body's inflammatory response. It appears to block the production of certain inflammatory mediators, such as prostaglandins, which are key players in the allergic reaction. Suppressing this inflammatory cascade effectively reduces the discomfort and visible symptoms of the allergy.
