Cardizem SR Information
Cardizem SR (Diltiazem SR) is prescribed alone or with other medications to lower high blood pressure and reduce the risk of cardiovascular complications, such as heart attack and stroke, associated with hypertension. It helps reduce the strain on the heart and arteries over time. It's also used to prevent and manage chronic stable angina (chest pain that occurs with physical exertion). It is also used in a type of angina called variant angina (Prinzmetal's angina), which occurs due to spasm of the coronary arteries. Essentially, it helps the heart get more oxygen while simultaneously lowering its oxygen demand.
Diltiazem itself is quite a widely used medication that belongs to a class of antihypertensive drugs called calcium channel blockers (specifically, the non-dihydropyridine type). The core function of diltiazem is that it blocks the movement of calcium into the cells of the heart and blood vessel walls. This action causes the muscles of the blood vessels to relax and widen (vasodilation), resulting in a reduction in the overall resistance to blood flow and blood pressure. It also slows the heart rate and reduces the force of the heart's contraction.
