Daraprim (Generic name: pyrimethamine) medication used for protozoal infections. It is most often used as a medication for malaria, both for preventing and treating the disease. Daraprim works by inhibiting the enzyme dihydrofolate reductase. This enzyme is needed for tetrahydrofolic acid synthesis from folic acid. Tetrahydrofolic acid is needed for the malaria protozoa's DNA and RNA synthesis. It cannot reproduce without it.
Daraprim side effects include loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting. Talk to your doctor if symptoms become bothersome or do not cease. If you experience any of these severe side effects, seek medical attention immediately: Severe allergic reactions, blood in the urine, irregular heartbeat, pale skin, red, swollen, or blistered skin, severe or persistent vomiting, sore throat or fever, or unusual bleeding or bruising. Do NOT take Daraprim if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in the medication. Talk to your doctor about medication interactions. These medications include: Phenytoin, Methotrexate, proguanil, quinine, sulfonamides (eg, sulfamethoxazole), or zidovudine because the risk of bone marrow suppression may be increased. Talk to your doctor before using Daraprim if you have, or have a history of, any of these conditions: depression, seizures, kidney or liver problems, bone marrow problems, stomach or bowel problems (eg, malabsorption syndrome), phenylketonuria, or alcoholism. Daraprim should not be used in pregnant or lactating women. Sufficient studies have not been completed. Talk to your doctor if your become pregnant while taking Daraprim. Daraprim is secreted in breastmilk. Do not breastfeed while taking Daraprim. Keep Daraprim away from children.
