Fleet Enema Information
Fleet Enema (Enemol) is a saline laxative that is used as a rapid-response solution for intestinal cleansing. It is specifically used to clean the colon in preparation for surgeries and medical procedures such as colonoscopies, sigmoidoscopies, or radiologic examinations. It is also used to treat constipation. It works through an osmotic effect in the intestine. Once this medication enters the rectum, the hypertonic (high-salt) concentration draws water from the surrounding tissues into the bowel. This increase in fluid volume softens the stool and stretches the rectal wall, which stimulates the intestinal muscles to contract and evacuate the stool, typically within 5 minutes. By clearing this waste, the enema ensures that the intestinal walls are visible for an accurate diagnosis of intestinal conditions. This mechanism also results in easy passage of stools and other intestinal contents in individuals with constipation.
