What is Mometamax (Gentamicin/Mometasone Furoate/Clotrimazole) Used For?
Mometamax (Gentamicin/Mometasone Furoate/Clotrimazole) is a combined prescription veterinary medication primarily used for the
treatment of otitis externa, which is an infection or inflammation of the outer ear canal in dogs. It is used to treat both acute cases and sudden flare-ups of chronic ear infections, specifically when they are caused by susceptible strains of yeast, such as Malassezia pachydermatis, or bacteria including Staphylococcus pseudintermedius, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and beta-hemolytic streptococci.
Mometamax works through the combined actions of its three active ingredients to resolve ear infections and inflammation. The antibiotic component, gentamicin sulfate, is bactericidal, meaning it kills bacteria by entering the cell and binding to specific structures called 30S ribosomes. This binding prevents the bacteria from creating the proteins they need to function and survive, effectively stopping the bacterial infection. The anti-inflammatory component, mometasone furoate, is a potent synthetic corticosteroid that acts locally on the skin of the ear canal. It suppresses the body's inflammatory response to the infection, which reduces physical symptoms like redness, itching, and swelling.
The antifungal component, clotrimazole, targets yeast and fungi that are actively growing and dividing. It works by inhibiting the synthesis of ergosterol, an essential component of the fungal cell membrane. This disrupts membrane permeability, causing essential internal substances, specifically phosphorus and potassium, to leak out of the cell. This loss of internal components destroys the integrity of the fungal cell, leading to its death and clearing the fungal portion of the infection. Together, these three actions treat the underlying causes while providing relief from the resulting clinical signs such as odor, discharge, and discomfort.
