What is Rapaflo (Silodosin) Used For?

Rapaflo (Silodosin) is a selective alpha-1 adrenergic receptor antagonist primarily used for the treatment of the signs and symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia, a condition involving an enlarged prostate that occurs only in men. These tissues contain alpha-1A adrenergic receptors, which normally cause muscles to contract when triggered. In benign prostatic hyperplasia, this contraction narrows the urinary channel and restricts urine flow. Silodosin selectively blocks these alpha-1A receptors and prevents the chemical signals that trigger muscle contraction. This, in turn, opens the pathway, reduces resistance, and allows urine to flow more easily and completely.
