Renagel (Sevelamer) is used to manage high blood phosphate levels, a condition called hyperphosphatemia, which is very common in people with chronic kidney disease or kidney failure who are on dialysis. Phosphate is made up mainly of the mineral phosphorus, which is an essential component of standard bone structure, cell metabolism, and cell function.

Phosphate is primarily excreted from the body by the kidneys.
