Synthroid Information

Synthroid (Levothyroxine) is primarily used in both children and adults to treat hypothyroidism. This medication is a synthetic form of levothyroxine (T4), a natural thyroid hormone, and effectively restores normal thyroid hormone levels. These hormones increase the body’s metabolism, influencing how cells and tissues use energy, produce proteins, control temperature, etc.

Synthroid may also be used as an adjunct therapy to surgery and radioiodine therapy in the treatment of individuals with thyrotropin-dependent well-differentiated thyroid cancer. It is beneficial in this condition, as it helps lower thyroid-stimulating hormone levels, thereby reducing the risk of these cancer cells growing and recurring. It is also one of the first line medications used in the treatment of myxedema coma, a medical emergency which occurs as a result of untreated hypothyroidism.

While levothyroxine is a lifelong therapy in most hypothyroid patients, most of whom experience weight gain despite normal diet, it should not be used for weight loss in people with normal thyroid function. It should also not be used to treat noncancerous growths or enlargement of the thyroid in patients with normal iodine levels, or in cases of temporary hypothyroidism caused by inflammation of the thyroid gland (thyroiditis).
