Vytorin (ezetimibe and simvastatin) is a combination medication primarily used to lower high cholesterol and triglyceride levels in patients for whom diet alone is not sufficient. It is indicated to reduce elevated total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), apolipoprotein B, triglycerides, and to increase high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). Vytorin is also approved to reduce the risk of cardiovascular events (cardiovascular death, non-fatal myocardial infarction, non-fatal stroke, hospitalization for unstable angina, or need for revascularization) in patients with coronary heart disease and a history of acute coronary syndrome. It combines two lipid-altering agents with complementary mechanisms of action: ezetimibe and simvastatin. Ezetimibe works by inhibiting the absorption of cholesterol from the small intestine. Simvastatin belongs to the statin class of drugs. It works by inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase, an enzyme essential for cholesterol production in the liver. This dual mechanism effectively reduces both the absorption of cholesterol from the diet and the body's production of cholesterol.
