Abilify (Aripiprazole) Information

Abilify, which contains the active ingredient aripiprazole, is an atypical antipsychotic It is widely used for several psychiatric conditions, including schizophrenia, bipolar I disorder (particularly manic or mixed episodes), major depressive disorder as an add-on treatment, irritability associated with autism spectrum disorder, and Tourette’s disorder. It can also be used for long-term stabilization to help prevent relapse in people with chronic psychiatric illnesses. Abilify is taken by mouth and is available in several formulations, including tablets, orally disintegrating tablets, and oral solution. It is taken once daily to support long-term therapy.

The mechanism of action for aripiprazole is precise and involves restoring balance to certain chemical messengers in the brain, particularly dopamine and serotonin, which play a major role in mood, thinking, and behavior. Unlike older antipsychotic medications that completely block dopamine, aripiprazole acts as a partial agonist, meaning it can decrease excessive dopamine activity when it is too high while also supporting dopamine activity when levels are too low. This stabilizing effect helps reduce symptoms such as hallucinations, disorganized thoughts, and severe mood swings. In addition, aripiprazole blocks specific serotonin receptors, which contributes to its antidepressant and mood-stabilizing effects. Its unique mechanism often results in fewer movement-related side effects and less sedation than traditional antipsychotics, although these effects may still occur.

Abilify Side Effects

Abilify is generally well-tolerated, but some common side effects may occur. Common side effects often reported include restlessness, headache, nausea, insomnia, anxiety, drowsiness, dizziness, constipation, and increased appetite. Children and adolescents may also experience drooling, tremors, and a more noticeable increase in appetite or weight.

Abilify Precautions

Do not use Abilify if you are allergic to aripiprazole or other ingredients in this medication. The use of Abilify requires careful consideration in certain individuals. Before starting treatment, it is important to discuss any existing medical conditions with your doctor. People with diabetes, high blood sugar, high cholesterol, heart conditions, low blood pressure, a history of fainting, seizures, or liver problems may require additional monitoring, as the medication can affect metabolic and cardiovascular function. Those who have experienced movement disorders such as tardive dyskinesia or Parkinson’s disease may be at greater risk of developing involuntary movements. Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between aripiprazole and other medications, particularly drugs that strongly affect liver enzymes responsible for metabolizing it. Examples include some antidepressants, antifungals, seizure medications, and certain antibiotics, which may require dose adjustments. Alcohol and other sedating substances should be avoided due to the risk of increased drowsiness or impaired judgment. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Because antipsychotic medications may cause complications in newborns when used during the final trimester of pregnancy, such as breathing difficulty or feeding problems, abilify should only be used during pregnancy if the benefits outweigh the risks. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeeding. Aripiprazole also passes into breast milk and can reduce milk production.

Use this medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Abilify is available as oral solution, tablets, and discmelt tablets. Take this medicine once daily, with or without food. Consistency is important, so taking it at the same time each day helps maintain stable medication levels in the body. Avoid stopping the drug suddenly or adjusting your dose without medical advice, as abrupt changes may lead to a return of symptoms or withdrawal-like effects. Improvement may become noticeable within one to two weeks, although symptoms such as mood instability or psychosis may take several weeks to respond fully. Abilify may increase the likelihood of impulsive or compulsive behaviors, including gambling or excessive spending, and anyone experiencing these symptoms should report them promptly. Store Abilify at room temperature, away from moisture, heat, and direct light.
