Generic Equivalent of Accupril
Accupril (Quinapril) Information
Accupril, which contains the active ingredient quinapril, is a prescription medication belonging to a class known as ACE (angiotensin-converting enzyme) inhibitors. It is primarily used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), which helps reduce the risk of long-term complications such as stroke and heart attack. It is also used as an additional treatment for heart failure to help manage symptoms and improve heart function. The medication is taken by mouth as tablets, usually once or twice daily. Your doctor will determine the appropriate dosage based on your condition and your response to treatment.
The mechanism of action involves blocking a specific enzyme that produces angiotensin II, a vasoconstrictor. By reducing the production of this chemical, Accupril allows blood vessels to relax and widen. This process lowers blood pressure and reduces the workload on the heart, making it easier for the heart to pump blood throughout the body.
Accupril Side Effects
Accupril is generally well-tolerated, but some common side effects may occur as the body adjusts to the medication. Commonly reported effects include a persistent dry cough, dizziness, fatigue, or a mild headache.
More serious side effects can occur and require immediate medical attention. Stop taking the medication and seek help if you experience:
• High potassium levels: Muscle weakness, slow or irregular heartbeat, or a tingling sensation in the hands or feet.
• Kidney problems: Significant changes in the amount or frequency of urine.
• Severe allergic reactions: Rash, swelling of the face, lips, or throat, and difficulty breathing.
Accupril Precautions
Do not use Accupril if you are allergic to quinapril or any other ACE inhibitor or if you have a history of severe allergic reactions (angioedema). Before starting treatment, inform your doctor of your complete medical history, especially if you have heart disease, kidney problems, liver problems, or diabetes.
Tell your doctor about all medications you take, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter products, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Quinapril may interact with water pills (diuretics), potassium supplements, or other blood pressure medications.
Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. Accupril should not be used during pregnancy as it can cause serious injury to a developing fetus. Quinapril passes into breast milk in small amounts. Consult your doctor if you are breastfeeding to weigh potential risks and benefits.
Use Accupril exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Take the medication at the same time each day to maintain stable levels of the drug in your blood. Consistent use at the same time each day is necessary to maintain steady blood pressure levels. Do not stop taking Accupril without consulting your doctor, as your blood pressure or heart failure symptoms may worsen. Store the tablets at room temperature, away from heat and light, and keep out of reach of children.
