Accuretic 20 (Quinapril/HCTZ) Information

Accuretic 20 is a combination medication containing two active ingredients - quinapril and hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ). Quinapril belongs to a class of drugs known as ACE (angiotensin-converting enzyme) inhibitors. Hydrochlorothiazide is a thiazide diuretic, often called a water pill. This medication is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in patients for whom combination therapy is appropriate. Managing high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems. The medication is taken by mouth as a tablet, typically once daily.

The mechanism of action involves two pathways to lower blood pressure. Quinapril works by blocking the production of chemicals that cause blood vessels to tighten, thereby allowing them to relax and widen. Hydrochlorothiazide works by increasing the amount of salt and water the kidneys remove from the blood, which is then excreted in the urine. Together, these actions reduce the total volume of blood in the blood vessels and lower the pressure against the arterial walls.

Accuretic 20 Side Effects

Accuretic 20 is generally well-tolerated, but some common side effects may occur as your body adjusts to the medication. Commonly reported effects include a persistent dry cough, dizziness or lightheadedness, headache, fatigue, and increased sensitivity to sunlight. You may also experience increased frequency of urination or mild stomach upset.

More serious side effects can occur and require immediate medical attention. Stop taking the medication and seek help if you experience:
• Electrolyte imbalance: Dry mouth, extreme thirst, muscle pain or weakness, or a very fast or irregular heartbeat.
• Kidney problems: A significant change in the amount of urine or swelling in the ankles and feet.
• Liver problems: Yellowing of the eyes or skin (jaundice), dark urine, or severe upper stomach pain.
• Severe allergic reactions (angioedema): Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat; difficulty breathing; or severe abdominal pain.
• Sudden vision changes: Eye pain or a significant decrease in vision shortly after starting the medication.

Accuretic 20 Precautions

Do not use Accuretic 20 if you are allergic to quinapril, hydrochlorothiazide, or other ACE inhibitors and sulfonamide-derived drugs. It should not be used if you have a history of angioedema or if you are unable to urinate. Before starting treatment, inform your doctor of your complete medical history, especially if you have kidney disease, liver disease, diabetes, lupus, gout, or heart valve problems.

Tell your doctor about all medications you take, including potassium supplements, lithium, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen, as these can interact with Accuretic 20. If you have diabetes, this medication may affect your blood sugar levels.

Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. Accuretic 20 must not be used during pregnancy, as ACE inhibitors can cause serious injury or death to a developing fetus. If you become pregnant, stop the medication and contact your doctor immediately. Both quinapril and hydrochlorothiazide can pass into breast milk, so consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

Take Accuretic 20 exactly as prescribed. It is essential to take it at the same time each day to maintain steady levels in your body. Your doctor will determine the appropriate dosage based on your medical condition and response to treatment. To prevent dehydration, drink plenty of fluids unless your doctor tells you otherwise. Because this medication increases urination, taking it early in the day may help prevent sleep interruption. Store the tablets at room temperature, away from moisture and light, and keep out of reach of children.
