Acidophilus Information

Acidophilus (Lactobacillus Acidophilus) is widely recognized as a probiotic or a biological response modifier. It isn't a drug in the traditional sense of a synthetic chemical, but rather a live, beneficial bacterium that is naturally occurring in the human microbiome. It is used to help restore the normal bacterial flora in the following diarrhea conditions: antibiotic-associated diarrhea, infectious diarrhea (including rotavirus in children), and traveler's diarrhea. It is also used to improve vagina health by maintaining an acidic pH in the vaginal vault to help manage or prevent bacterial vaginosis and yeast infections. Some evidence suggests it may be beneficial for individuals with lactose intolerance, as it may help break down lactose, potentially easing the bloating or gas some people experience after consuming dairy. The active component in this probiotic is the live culture of Lactobacillus acidophilus itself. It works through competitive blockage and the modification of the local microenvironment. It physically blocks pathogens from attaching by adhering to the intestinal or vaginal mucosa. It also ferments carbohydrates to produce lactic acid and hydrogen peroxide, which lowers the local pH. This acidity is a natural defense that inhibits the overgrowth of harmful, pH-sensitive bacteria and fungi.

Acidophilus Side Effects

Common mild and temporary side effects of this medication include mild stomach discomfort, diarrhea, constipation, and gas or bloating. Contact your doctor if these temporary side effects don't resolve or bother you.

Stop taking this medicine and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any serious side effects, especially allergic reactions such as breathing difficulties, body itching, body rash, skin blistering, swelling of the face, mouth, tongue, lips, or throat. Inform your doctor about any other side effects you notice that are not listed here.

Acidophilus Precautions

Do not take this medication if you are allergic to Lactobacillus acidophilus, other ingredients in Acidophilus, or any other medicines. Before you start taking this medication, ensure that you inform your doctor about any prior or current medical conditions, including the following:
• Abdominal problems such as short bowel syndrome and intestinal perforation;
• Diarrhea with fever lasting more than 2 days;
• Heart disease, such as damaged heart valves;
• Liver disease;
• Recurrent vagina or urinary tract infection;
• Weakened immune system due to cancer medications or HIV infection

Current evidence suggests that Lactobacillus acidophilus is likely safe during both pregnancy and breastfeeding. This medication is not recommended for use in children younger than 3 years. Because the bacteria are not significantly absorbed into the systemic circulation from the gut, they are unlikely to reach the fetus or pass into breast milk in any meaningful amount. Since antibiotics are designed to kill bacteria, they will also kill the Lactobacillus in the supplement, rendering it ineffective. To maintain the probiotics' viability, it is recommended to space doses by at least 2 hours. Drugs such as cyclosporine, tacrolimus, or high-dose corticosteroids (e.g., prednisone) may interact poorly with probiotics. Therefore, before using Acidophilus, it is important to inform your doctor about any other medications you are currently taking, including herbal medications and supplements, to determine if it is safe to use along with Lactobacillus acidophilus. Swallow the caplets whole with a full glass of water or juice, as directed by your doctor. It is recommended to take this medication about 30 minutes before a meal to ensure optimal survival in the stomach's acidic environment. Consult your doctor to determine the best dose of this medication for your specific condition, as it may vary depending on your age, the condition being treated, and other factors. It is also important to read the leaflet in the medication pack for more details about its use. Contact your doctor if your condition doesn't improve or gets worse while taking this medication. Store this medication at room temperature, away from sunlight and moisture, and out of reach of children.
