Aldactazide Information

Aldactazide (Spironolactone/HCTZ) is used in the treatment of hypertension to lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of complications of hypertension, such as heart attack and stroke. It is used as part of a comprehensive management plan alongside lifestyle and dietary modifications. It may also be used in individuals with hypertension to treat hypokalemia (low potassium in the blood) caused by the use of other blood pressure medicines like water pills. Aside from its use in lowering blood pressure, it has also been found effective in treating edematous conditions, which involve excessive fluid retention. It is used in the treatment of edema or fluid retention caused by conditions such as congestive heart failure, liver cirrhosis, and kidney problems like nephrotic syndrome. It is typically used when other treatments have proven ineffective.

Aldactazide is a combination drug containing two active ingredients: spironolactone and hydrochlorothiazide. Chemically, it belongs to the class of diuretics (specifically, a potassium-sparing diuretic paired with a thiazide). Hydrochlorothiazide inhibits sodium reabsorption in the distal tubules of the kidney, thereby flushing out salt and water. At the same time, spironolactone blocks the action of the hormone aldosterone, promoting further fluid loss while preventing potassium depletion. This synergy is particularly effective for chronic edematous diseases like congestive heart failure and liver cirrhosis. In heart failure, the heart struggles to pump efficiently, causing fluid to back up into the lungs or limbs; in cirrhosis, liver scarring disrupts blood flow and hormone regulation, leading to abdominal swelling due to fluid buildup. Aldactazide helps by reducing overall fluid volume and blood pressure in the circulatory system, which eases the workload on a failing heart and alleviates the painful pressure from abdominal fluid buildup.

Aldactazide Side Effects

Although not experienced by everyone, Aldactazide has its side effects. Common side effects of this medication include constipation, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, decreased appetite, upset stomach, dryness of the mouth, dizziness or lightheadedness when getting up from a lying down or sitting position, pins and needles in your fingers, headache, reduced libido, significant enlargement in men, breast discomfort or irregular or missed menstrual periods in women, and blurred vision. Stop taking this medicine and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any serious side effects, including the following:
• Allergic reactions such as breathing difficulties, body itching, body rash, skin blistering, swelling of the face, mouth, tongue, lips, or throat;
• Anemia (low red blood cells) with symptoms like dizziness, pale skin, unusual tiredness or weakness;
• Easy bruising and bleeding;
• Electrolyte imbalance with symptoms like irregular heartbeat, muscle weakness;
• Eye problems such as eye pain, persistently blurred vision;
• Fever or chills, body weakness, cough or hoarseness, shortness of breath, prolonged dizziness or other signs of infection;
• High blood sugar with symptoms like frequent thirst and urination;
• Kidney problems like vomiting, hiccups, and a reduction in urination;
• Liver problems such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, yellow eyes, and skin;
• Low blood pressure with symptoms such as persistent dizziness, especially with postural changes;
• Lump or discolored patch on the skin;
• Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) with symptoms like severe upper abdominal pain, loss of appetite, vomiting

Aldactazide Precautions

Do not take this medication if you are allergic to spironolactone, hydrochlorothiazide, other ingredients in Aldactazide, or any other medicines. Before you start taking this medication, ensure that you inform your doctor about any prior or current medical conditions, including the following:
• Addison's disease or other disease of the adrenal gland;
• Diabetes mellitus;
• Electrolyte imbalance, such as high potassium in the blood;
• Eye problems;
• Gout;
• High blood cholesterol;
• Kidney disease;
• Liver disease;
• Skin cancer;
• Systemic lupus erythematosus;
• Urinating difficulties

As this medication can cause dizziness and blurry vision, it is usually recommended to avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you are sure how it affects you. This medication can make your skin more sensitive to the sun. Some studies have also suggested a slightly increased risk of non-melanoma skin cancer with long-term use of hydrochlorothiazide; therefore, regular skin checks with your doctor are essential. While this medication is used to treat low potassium levels, it can cause potassium levels to build to dangerous levels. You should generally avoid potassium supplements and excessive amounts of high-potassium foods, such as bananas or spinach, while taking this medication. Aldactazide is generally not recommended during pregnancy unless the benefits significantly outweigh the risks, as it can interfere with the regular fluid changes of pregnancy and potentially affect fetal development. It is also found in breast milk, so nursing mothers should consult their doctor before use. This medication is not suitable for use in individuals under 18 years of age. Some medications, like nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, can affect the kidneys and reduce the diuretic and antihypertensive effects of Aldactazide. Taking lithium with this medication can lead to lithium toxicity with potentially serious adverse effects. Likewise, taking this medication with some other blood pressure drugs like lisinopril and losartan can lead to dangerously high levels of potassium in the blood. Therefore, you must inform your healthcare provider about all the medications, including herbal medications and supplements, that you are taking before starting Aldactazide to prevent drug interactions.

Take the tablet by mouth exactly as your doctor prescribes, usually once daily in the morning. You may take it with food if the drug upsets your stomach, as this often improves tolerance. Consistency matters the most, so try to take your dose at the same time every day to maintain steady levels. Avoid taking this medication late in the evening so you do not have to wake up frequently during the night to use the bathroom. Store the bottle at room temperature in a dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture.
