Alphagan and Equivalent
Generic Equivalent of Alphagan
Alphagan (Brimonidine) Information
Alphagan, which contains the active ingredient brimonidine, is an eye drop used to lower elevated intraocular pressure in people with glaucoma or ocular hypertension. High eye pressure can damage the optic nerve and lead to vision loss, and Alphagan helps reduce this risk. It is typically prescribed one to three times daily, depending on your doctor’s instructions. It may be used alone or with other medications to control eye pressure.
The mechanism of action of brimonidine involves reducing the amount of fluid (aqueous humour) produced in the eye and increasing fluid drainage, thereby lowering intraocular pressure. Its action helps protect the optic nerve and maintain healthy vision.
Alphagan Side Effects
Alphagan is generally well-tolerated, but some common side effects may occur. Commonly reported effects include temporary burning, stinging, or discomfort in the eyes, itching, dry eyes, or watery eyes, blurred vision, and occasionally fatigue or drowsiness. Some people may experience headache, dry mouth, or mild dizziness.
More serious side effects can occur and require immediate medical attention. Stop taking the medication and seek help if you experience:
• Confusion, depression, or unusual drowsiness (especially in older adults)
• Severe allergic reactions, including rash, swelling of the face, lips, or throat, difficulty breathing
• Severe eye pain, swelling, or signs of infection
• Significant worsening of vision
• Very low blood pressure, fainting, or slow heartbeat
Alphagan Precautions
Do not use Alphagan if you are allergic to brimonidine or any ingredient in the eye drop. Inform your doctor if you have a history of heart problems, low blood pressure, depression, kidney disease, liver disease, or severe cardiovascular disease.
Tell your doctor about all medications you take, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter products, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Alphagan may interact with antidepressants, blood pressure medications, or other eye drops.
Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding. Alphagan should only be used during pregnancy if clearly needed. It is unknown if brimonidine passes into breastmilk. Discuss breastfeeding with your doctor.
Use Alphagan exactly as prescribed. Wash your hands before use, tilt your head back, and instill the recommended number of drops into the affected eye(s). Avoid touching the dropper tip to your eye or eyelid. After instillation, gently close your eye and apply light pressure to the inner corner for 1–2 minutes to reduce systemic absorption. Do not stop using the drops suddenly without consulting your doctor. Store at room temperature, away from heat and light, and keep out of reach of children.
