Altace and Equivalent
Generic Equivalent of Altace
Altace (Ramipril) Information
Altace, which contains the active ingredient ramipril, is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor used primarily to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Altace lowers blood pressure, helping reduce the risk of strokes and heart attacks, and may help slow the progression of kidney disease in certain patients, particularly those with diabetes or protein in the urine. It is also prescribed to improve survival after a heart attack and to treat heart failure in patients who have shown signs of heart muscle weakness. Additionally, Altace may be used in certain high-risk patients to reduce the risk of cardiovascular events. The medication is taken by mouth as a capsule, typically once or twice daily, as directed by your doctor.
The mechanism of action of ramipril involves blocking an enzyme that produces the hormone angiotensin II. Angiotensin II causes blood vessels to constrict. By reducing its production, Altace relaxes and dilates blood vessels. This action lowers blood pressure and makes it easier for the heart to pump blood throughout the body.
Altace Side Effects
Altace is generally well-tolerated, but some common side effects may occur as your body adjusts to the medication. Commonly reported effects include a persistent dry cough, dizziness or lightheadedness (especially when standing up quickly), headache, and fatigue. Some people may also experience nausea, vomiting, or mild stomach upset.
More serious side effects can occur and require immediate medical attention. Stop taking the medication and seek help if you experience:
• High potassium levels: muscle weakness, a slow or irregular heartbeat, or tingling.
• Kidney problems: A significant change in the amount of urine or swelling in the feet and ankles.
• Liver problems (rare): Yellowing of the eyes or skin (jaundice), dark urine, or severe stomach pain.
• Severe allergic reactions (angioedema): Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat; difficulty breathing; or severe stomach cramping.
• Signs of infection (rare): Fever, chills, or a persistent sore throat.
Altace Precautions
Do not use Altace if you are allergic to ramipril or any other ACE inhibitor, or if you have a history of angioedema. Do not use it in combination with sacubitril or valsartan, or if you have diabetes and are taking aliskiren.
Before starting treatment, inform your doctor of your complete medical history, especially if you have kidney disease, liver disease, heart valve problems, or a history of severe allergic reactions. Disclose all medications you are currently taking, including diuretics (water pills), potassium supplements, lithium, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen, as these may interact with Altace.
Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. Altace must not be used during pregnancy because it can cause serious injury or even death to a developing fetus. If you discover you are pregnant, stop the medication immediately and contact your doctor. Consult your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Ramipril may be used with caution while breastfeeding in some cases, depending on the infant’s age and clinical circumstances.
Take Altace exactly as prescribed, with or without food. To ensure effective blood pressure control, it is essential to take the medication consistently at the same time(s) each day. Do not stop using the medication without consulting your doctor, as your blood pressure may increase if treatment is discontinued. When switching from Altace to sacubitril/valsartan, a minimum 36-hour washout period is required to reduce the risk of angioedema. Store the capsules at room temperature, away from moisture and light, and keep out of reach of children.
