Altace HCTZ (Ramipril/hydrochlorothiazide) Information

Altace HCTZ is a combination medication containing two active ingredients - ramipril and hydrochlorothiazide. Ramipril is an ACE (angiotensin-converting enzyme) inhibitor, and hydrochlorothiazide is a thiazide diuretic, commonly known as a water pill. This medication is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in patients for whom combination therapy is appropriate. Effectively managing blood pressure helps reduce the risk of life-threatening events such as strokes and heart attacks. The medicine is taken by mouth as a tablet, usually once daily in the morning.

The mechanism of action involves two synergistic methods of lowering blood pressure. It should not be used if you have a history of angioedema or if you are unable to urinate. Before starting treatment, inform your doctor of your complete medical history, especially if you have kidney or liver disease, diabetes, lupus, gout, or heart valve problems.
