Altace HCTZ (Ramipril/hydrochlorothiazide) Information

Altace HCTZ is a combination medication containing two active ingredients - ramipril and hydrochlorothiazide. Ramipril is an ACE (angiotensin-converting enzyme) inhibitor, and hydrochlorothiazide is a thiazide diuretic, commonly known as a water pill. This medication is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in patients for whom combination therapy is appropriate. Effectively managing blood pressure helps reduce the risk of life-threatening events such as strokes and heart attacks. The medicine is taken by mouth as a tablet, usually once daily in the morning.

The mechanism of action involves two synergistic methods of lowering blood pressure. Ramipril works by blocking the production of substances that cause blood vessels to tighten, thereby allowing them to relax and widen. Hydrochlorothiazide works by prompting the kidneys to remove excess salt and water from the body through increased urination. Together, these actions decrease the total volume of fluid in the blood and lower arterial pressure.

Altace HCTZ Side Effects

Altace HCTZ is generally well-tolerated, but some common side effects may occur as the body adjusts to the medication. Commonly reported effects include a persistent dry cough, dizziness or lightheadedness (especially when standing up), headache, fatigue, and increased sensitivity to sunlight. Due to the diuretic component, you may also experience more frequent urination or a dry mouth.

More serious side effects can occur and require immediate medical attention. Stop taking the medication and seek help if you experience:
• Electrolyte imbalance: Signs such as extreme thirst, confusion, muscle weakness, or a very fast or irregular heartbeat.
• Kidney problems: A significant change in the amount of urine produced or swelling in the feet and ankles.
• Liver problems: Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), dark urine, or severe pain in the upper stomach area.
• Severe allergic reactions (angioedema): Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat; difficulty breathing; or severe abdominal pain.

Altace HCTZ Precautions

Do not use Altace HCTZ if you are allergic to ramipril, hydrochlorothiazide, other ACE inhibitors, or sulfonamide-derived drugs (sulfa drugs). It should not be used if you have a history of angioedema or if you are unable to urinate. Before starting treatment, inform your doctor of your complete medical history, especially if you have kidney or liver disease, diabetes, lupus, gout, or heart valve problems.

Tell your doctor about all medications you take, including potassium supplements, lithium, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen, as these can interact with Altace HCTZ. If you have diabetes, this medication may affect your blood sugar levels.

Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to breastfeed. Altace HCTZ must not be used during pregnancy, as ACE inhibitors can cause serious injury or death to a developing fetus. If you become pregnant, stop the medication and contact your doctor immediately. Because both ingredients can pass into breast milk, discuss the risks and benefits of breastfeeding with your healthcare provider.

Take Altace HCTZ exactly as prescribed. Taking the medication at the same time each day helps maintain consistent blood pressure control. Your doctor will determine the correct dosage based on your specific medical needs and how you respond to the treatment. To avoid dehydration, ensure you drink enough fluids throughout the day unless otherwise directed. Since this medication increases urination, taking it in the morning is often recommended to prevent sleep disruption. Store the tablets at room temperature, away from moisture and light, and keep out of reach of children.
