AluGel Information

AluGel (Aluminum Hydroxide) is an antacid. It used to treat the symptoms of too much stomach acid such as stomach upset, heartburn, and acid indigestion. Aluminum hydroxide works quickly to lower the acid in the stomach and its effects can be felt within a few minutes. This medication works only on existing acid in the stomach. It does not prevent acid production. AluGel (Aluminum hydroxide) is also used to reduce phosphate levels in people with certain kidney conditions or to prevent kidney stones. AluGel is available as 320 mg/5 ml/425 ml oral suspension.

AluGel Side Effects

The most common side effects of AluGel may include white colored stools; unusual sense of taste; nausea and vomiting; constipation: to prevent this, drink plenty of water and exercise; loss of appetite. Call your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Bloody or tarry stools, coughing up blood or vomit that looks like coffee grounds;
• Extreme drowsiness;
• Muscle weakness, tiredness;
• Mental or mood changes such as confusion, deep sleep;
• Pain when you urinate;
• Severe stomach pain or constipation, loss of appetite.

AluGel Precautions

Do not use AluGel if you are allergic to Aluminum Hydroxide or to any other ingredients in this medication. Before you start taking this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history, especially if you are pregnant or breast feeding; if you have frequent alcohol use problems; dehydration; problems with constipation; kidney problems. Tell your doctor about all the medications you take including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between AluGel and other medications. Antacids can make it harder for your body to absorb other medicines you take by mouth. Avoid taking other medications within 2 hours before or 2 hours after you take aluminum hydroxide. Do not take aluminum hydroxide for longer than 2 weeks without your doctor's advice.
