Antabuse and Equivalent
Generic Equivalent of Antabuse
Antabuse Information
Antabuse (Disulfiram) is primarily used as a second-line treatment for chronic alcoholism and alcohol dependence, characterized by an inability to manage or quit drinking despite negative social or physical consequences. It is typically used along with psychotherapeutic and supportive treatments in a motivated individual who has abstained from alcohol for at least 24 hours. Antabuse, which contains the active ingredient disulfiram, belongs to a class of drugs known as aldehyde dehydrogenase inhibitors.
This medication works by disrupting the body’s normal metabolic pathway for ethanol; specifically, it blocks the enzyme that breaks down acetaldehyde, a toxic byproduct of alcohol. So when an individual with alcohol dependence takes alcohol while taking this medication, there is an immediate and severe buildup of acetaldehyde, triggering a violent physical reaction involving flushing, nausea, and palpitations. These reactions serve as a deterrent to drinking alcohol. Antabuse does not actually eliminate the underlying craving for alcohol, nor does it address the neurochemical changes associated with addiction. Instead, it serves as a powerful psychological and physiological deterrent that supports behavioral therapy and long-term sobriety goals.

Do not use this medicine during pregnancy or while breastfeeding without consulting your doctor.
Disulfiram can enhance the anticoagulant effect of warfarin, potentially leading to bleeding issues. Taking disulfiram with metronidazole can lead to acute psychosis or confusion. Therefore, before using this medication, inform your doctor about any other medications you are currently taking, including herbal medicines and supplements, to determine if it is safe to use along with disulfiram. Take Antabuse tablets once daily, usually in the morning, with or without food, as prescribed by your doctor. If it causes drowsiness, take it at bedtime to minimize its effects. Only use this medicine after at least 24 hours of not drinking alcohol. Avoid alcohol or alcohol containing preparations while using Antabuse and for up to 14 days after stopping it. Consult your doctor and refer to the leaflet included with the medication for additional usage instructions. Store this medication in a cool, dry place, away from moisture and out of reach of children.
