Anusol HC Information

Anusol HC (Hydrocortisone/Zinc) treats inflammation and associated discomfort of the anal and rectal area, such as hemorrhoids and anal itching. Hemorrhoids, also known as piles, are swollen veins in the anus and lower rectum that can cause pain, itching, and rectal bleeding. They can occur internally inside the rectum or externally under the skin around the anus. Corticosteroids like hydrocortisone acetate work by reducing inflammation and suppressing the immune response in the affected area, thereby alleviating swelling, pain, itching, and redness. Some formulations may also contain zinc oxide, an astringent that provides a protective barrier and can reduce swelling.

Anusol HC Side Effects

The most common side effects of Anusol HC may include local skin irritation, burning, itching, dryness, and redness. Call your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects, such as:
• Rectal bleeding;
• Signs of an allergic reaction, such as rash, breathing difficulties, itching or swelling of the face, tongue, or throat;
• Skin thinning (with prolonged use)

Anusol HC Precautions

Do not use Anusol HC if you are allergic to Hydrocortisone, Zinc or other ingredients in this medication. Before you start using this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history, including if you have high blood pressure, irregular heart rhythm, an infection in the area to be treated, a history of unexplained or persistent rectal bleeding, diabetes, fungal infection, think you may be pregnant, or plan to become pregnant, are breastfeeding, or are planning to breastfeed. Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Anusol HC and other medications, such as other topical medications. Do not use Anusol HC if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant without informing your doctor. It is unknown if this medicine will harm an unborn baby. Do not use Anusol HC while breastfeeding without talking to your doctor. It is unknown if Hydrocortisone or Zinc passes into breast milk or if they may harm a nursing infant. The safety and effectiveness of Anusol HC in children have not been established.

Use your medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Anusol HC comes as ointment and suppositories. Please do not take it by mouth. This medicine is for the rectal area only. Wash the affected area with mild soap and water and dry thoroughly before applying the ointment. Apply a thin layer of the medication to the affected area. Please do not rub it in vigorously. Wash your hands after applying the medicine. For internal hemorrhoids, use the applicator provided. It's often recommended to try to have a bowel movement before using an Anusol HC suppository so that the medication has maximum contact time with the affected area. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water. Gently cleanse the anal area with mild soap and water. Rinse thoroughly and pat dry with a soft towel. If the suppository feels soft due to warmth, you can chill it in the refrigerator for a few minutes to firm it up, making it easier to insert. Carefully remove the outer wrapping from the suppository. You can moisten the pointed end of the suppository with a few drops of water or a water-soluble lubricant to make insertion easier. You can lie on your side with one leg bent towards your stomach or stand with one leg raised on a chair to make the insertion easier. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after inserting the suppository. Try to lie down for about 15-20 minutes to allow the suppository to dissolve and the medication to be absorbed. Avoid having a bowel movement for at least one hour to give the medication time to work. Try to avoid strenuous activity immediately after insertion. Do not use Anusol HC for longer than seven consecutive days unless specifically directed by your doctor. Store Anusol HC at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Keep all medicines out of reach of children.
