Atarax Information

Atarax (Hydroxyzine) is used in adults to manage anxiety and tension associated with psychoneuroses or organic brain disorders. It is also used in preparation for a surgical procedure to reduce anxiety. It is also used to treat nausea and vomiting, especially after chemotherapy or surgery. Furthermore, it can also be used to treat body itching, rash, and other symptoms caused by allergic reactions. Its active ingredient is hydroxyzine hydrochloride, a first-generation antihistamine. It works by blocking histamine H1 receptors in the body, which helps relieve allergic symptoms such as itching and rash. It also acts on some regions of the central nervous system to produce a calming effect, making it helpful for anxiety and tension. Its anticholinergic and antiemetic properties also help reduce nausea and vomiting. It starts working within 15 to 60 minutes, and its effects can last for several hours.

Therefore, avoid driving or operating machinery while using this medicine. Do not use this medicine during pregnancy (especially in the first trimester) or while breastfeeding. Atarax should be taken with caution by older adults, as they may be more sensitive to its side effects. Caution is advised when using hydroxyzine with other medications and substances such as aclidinium, amphetamines, antiarrhythmic drugs, and certain antibiotics. Also, its sedative effects may also be potentiated by drugs such as narcotics, non-narcotic pain relievers, sleeping pills and alcohol. Therefore, inform your healthcare provider about all the medicines, including herbal supplements and over-the-counter products, that you are taking before starting Atarax to prevent potential drug interactions. Atarax comes in tablet, capsule, and oral solution or syrup forms. Tablets and capsules should be swallowed whole with water and can be taken with or without food. It's important not to crush, chew, or open them. For the oral solution, always shake the bottle before use and make use of the special measuring device provided in the medication pack to ensure accuracy.
