Australian Gold (Sun Tan and After Sun Preparation) is a group of topical over-the-counter preparations used to protect the skin against the harmful effects of sunlight. It helps protect the skin against different forms of ultraviolet radiation, including ultraviolet B rays (UVB), which mainly cause sunburn and sometimes skin cancer, and ultraviolet A rays (UVA), which cause aging, deep skin damage, and skin cancer. Unlike chemical sunscreens that are absorbed into the skin, these mineral compounds sit on the skin's surface, creating a protective barrier that primarily reflects and scatters harmful UV rays. The inclusion of native Australian botanicals, such as the antioxidant-rich Kakadu Plum, adds a unique and nourishing dimension to these formulations.

Australian Gold also offers the Sport Sprays and the Spray Gel with Bronzer, both with sun protection factor rating of 30. These products contain a blend of chemical sunscreen filters, including avobenzone, homosalate, octisalate, and octocrylene. These ingredients function by being absorbed into the upper layers of the skin, where they absorb high-energy UV radiation and convert it into low-level heat, preventing it from damaging DNA and causing sunburn, and contributing to long-term skin cancer risk. The continuous formulation encourages frequent reapplication. The Spray Gel with Bronzer is unique in that it provides the same protection but with an instant, temporary cosmetic bronze from color additives like Caramel.

The Australian Gold Sunless Lotion offers a potent degree of cosmetic tanning without sun exposure. Its active ingredient, dihydroxyacetone, reacts with amino acids on the top skin layer to create a brownish tone, mimicking a sun tan without UV exposure. The entire purpose of this lotion is to prevent the aesthetic and health consequences of UV-induced skin damage (like photoaging and cancer) by eliminating the need for UV light to achieve a tan.

Australian Gold Side Effects

These products are generally safe to use, but they may cause some mild skin irritation, such as mild redness, stinging, or itching upon application.

However, stop using this medicine and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any serious side effects, including an allergic reaction such as breathing difficulties, body itching, body rash, skin blistering, swelling of the face, mouth, tongue, lips, or throat.

Australian Gold Precautions

Do not use these Australian Gold skin products if you are allergic to the active and inactive ingredients in these topical products, or any other skin product. Do not use these topical products on damaged or broken skin, as this allows for much greater absorption of ingredients, particularly the chemical filters. Keep all sunscreens out of the eyes. If contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with water immediately. With the Sport Continuous Spray, Spray Gel, and sunless tanners, you must take care to avoid breathing the spray mist. It is generally best to spray it into your hands first, then apply it to your face, while ensuring you use it in a well-ventilated area. Do not use these products on children under 6 months old without first consulting a doctor.

The Sunless Lotion does not contain a sun protection factor and offers no protection against UV rays. Skin applied with this sunless tan lotion must still be protected with a separate, full-spectrum sunscreen before going outdoors. Avoid using deodorants with this sunless lotion, as some deodorants can react with dihydroxyacetone, which can sometimes cause a peculiar green tinge.
