What is Avodart (Dutasteride) Used For?

Avodart (Dutasteride) is a 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor approved for use in adult men to treat a condition called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), which is a non-cancerous growth or enlargement of the prostate gland. It is typically prescribed to improve urinary symptoms, reduce the risk of a complete blockage of urine flow known as acute urinary retention, and lower the chances of needing surgery related to the enlarged prostate. Avodart can be used either on its own or in combination with another medication called tamsulosin.

Avodart works by blocking an enzyme in the body called 5-alpha-reductase, which comes in two forms, type 1 and type 2. This enzyme is responsible for turning the hormone testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), the primary hormone that causes the prostate gland to grow and enlarge. Dutasteride binds to these enzymes to form a stable complex, preventing them from carrying out this conversion and leading to a major drop in dihydrotestosterone levels in the blood and prostate tissue. As a result, the enlarged prostate gland begins to shrink in size. This shrinkage allows urine to flow more easily, relieving symptoms like a weak stream or frequent trips to the bathroom, and helps prevent serious complications related to the enlargement.

Be sure always to take this medication as prescribed by your doctor. For more information about its use, check out its product monograph.

What Side Effects Can Avodart or Generic Dutasteride Cause?

The more common side effects of this medication include inability to achieve or sustain an erection, reduced sex drive, difficulty with ejaculation, breast enlargement and tenderness, and dizziness. Other possible side effects include hair loss and reduction in sperm count in men. Discuss these side effects with your doctor.

Serious side effects may include:
• Allergic reactions with symptoms such as breathing difficulties, body rash, itching, hives, skin blistering, swelling of the face, lips, or throat;
• Heart failure with symptoms like shortness of breath, extreme tiredness or swelling in the legs and ankles;

Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of these serious side effects. Ensure you inform your doctor about any other side effects you notice that are not listed here.

Warnings

Do not use this medication if you have an allergic reaction to dutasteride, or any other ingredients in Avodart. It is also not for use in children and women, particularly those who are pregnant or may become pregnant, because the active ingredient can cause serious harm to a developing male fetus. This medication can readily pass through the skin, and as a result, women who are pregnant or of childbearing potential must not handle crushed, broken, or leaking capsules. If accidental contact occurs, wash the skin immediately with soap and water.

Consult your doctor before using this medication, as other urological conditions that might mimic an enlarged prostate, such as prostate cancer or obstructive uropathy, may need to be ruled out. Avodart should be used with caution in individuals with heart disease, obstructive uropathy, and liver disease. Men taking Avodart must wait at least six months after their last dose before donating blood to prevent a pregnant woman from receiving this medication through transfusion. Also, as dutasteride is secreted into human semen, men taking Avodart whose female sexual partners are pregnant or may become pregnant should use condoms during intercourse to eliminate potential exposure to this medication through intercourse.

Clinical trial data (notably from the REDUCE and PCPT trials) revealed that while 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors like dutasteride lower the overall incidence of low-grade prostate cancers, they are associated with a slightly increased risk of being diagnosed with more aggressive prostate cancer. You should discuss this risk profile with your doctor before starting this medication. As this medication can reduce total serum prostate-specific antigen concentrations by approximately 50% after 6 months, your doctor will need to establish a new post-treatment prostate-specific antigen baseline. This is because any rise in prostate-specific antigen value while on Avodart (even if within a normal value) must be evaluated, as it could signal underlying prostate cancer.

Potent and chronic inhibitors of liver enzymes known as CYP3A4, such as the HIV medication ritonavir, fungal treatments like ketoconazole or itraconazole, and blood pressure medications like verapamil or diltiazem, can abnormally increase the levels of Avodart in the blood. Other medicines that may increase Avodart levels include the antidepressant nefazodone and certain antibiotics like clarithromycin or ciprofloxacin. Therefore, before using this medication, inform your doctor about any other medications you are currently taking, including herbal medicines and supplements, to determine whether it is safe to use along with Avodart. Store this medication at room temperature and keep away from children and pets.
