Betoptic (Betaxolol) Information

Betoptic, which contains the active ingredient betaxolol, is a beta-blocker eye drop used to lower elevated eye pressure in people with glaucoma or ocular hypertension. High eye pressure can damage the optic nerve and lead to vision loss, and Betoptic helps reduce this risk. It is usually prescribed once or twice daily, as directed by your doctor. It may be used alone or with other eye pressure-lowering medications.

The mechanism of action of betaxolol involves reducing the production of fluid (aqueous humour) inside the eye, which lowers intraocular pressure. By decreasing pressure, betaxolol helps protect the optic nerve and maintain healthy vision.

Betoptic Side Effects

Betoptic is generally well-tolerated, but some common side effects may occur. Commonly reported effects include temporary burning, stinging, or discomfort in the eyes, slight blurred vision, dry eyes, or a feeling of fatigue. Some people may experience headache, dizziness, or a slow heartbeat due to small amounts of the drug entering the bloodstream.

More serious side effects can occur and require immediate medical attention. Stop taking the medication and seek help if you experience:
• Severe allergic reactions, including rash, swelling of the face, lips, or throat, difficulty breathing
• Severe eye pain, swelling, or signs of infection
• Significant changes in vision
• Very slow heartbeat, fainting, dizziness, or shortness of breath
• Worsening of pre-existing heart or lung conditions

Betoptic Precautions

Do not use Betoptic if you are allergic to betaxolol or any ingredient in the eye drop. Inform your doctor if you have a history of heart problems, low blood pressure, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or diabetes, as beta-blockers can sometimes affect these conditions. Tell your doctor about all medications you take, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter products, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Betaxolol may interact with other beta-blockers, heart medications, or other blood pressure medications.

Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding. Betoptic should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. It is unknown if betaxolol passes into breast milk. Discuss breastfeeding with your doctor.

Use Betoptic exactly as prescribed. Wash your hands before use, tilt your head back, and instill the recommended number of drops into the affected eye(s). Avoid touching the dropper tip to your eye or eyelid. After instillation, gently close your eye and press lightly on the inner corner for 1–2 minutes to reduce systemic absorption. If you wear contact lenses, remove them before using Betoptic. Wait at least 15 minutes after using the drops before putting your lenses back in. Do not stop using the drops suddenly without consulting your doctor. Store at room temperature, away from heat and light, and keep out of reach of children.
