Blexten Information

Blexten (bilastine) is a second-generation antihistamine used to relieve the symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis, such as sneezing, runny and itchy nose, and watery eyes, as well as symptoms of chronic spontaneous urticaria (hives and itching). Unlike first-generation antihistamines, which can cross the blood-brain barrier and cause significant drowsiness, bilastine is a non-sedating antihistamine. It works by selectively blocking the histamine H1 receptor, preventing the action of histamine, a natural substance in the body that triggers allergic reactions. By inhibiting histamine's effects, it effectively reduces the inflammation and other symptoms associated with allergies.

Bilastine is a newer generation H1-receptor antagonist with a specific mechanism of action that makes it highly effective and generally well-tolerated. It has a high affinity for the H1 receptor and a rapid onset of action, with effects often noticed within an hour. For optimal effectiveness, it is crucial to take Blexten on an empty stomach. Food, and especially fruit juices like grapefruit juice, can significantly reduce the absorption of the medication, which can lead to a decrease in its efficacy. Therefore, it is recommended to take the tablet with water either one hour before a meal or two hours after a meal. Blexten provides 24-hour relief, making a once-daily dose sufficient for most patients.

Blexten Side Effects

While Blexten is generally considered a non-sedating antihistamine, some individuals may still experience side effects. The most common side effects reported are often mild and include headache, dizziness, and mild drowsiness or fatigue. Other less common side effects can include stomach pain, nausea, or a dry mouth. These effects are usually temporary and may go away as your body adjusts to the medication.

However, more serious side effects can occur, although they are rare. If you experience any of the following, you should stop taking the medication and seek immediate medical attention:

• Cardiovascular Effects: Blexten can cause changes to the heart's electrical activity, specifically a prolongation of the QT interval. This can lead to serious and potentially fatal heart rhythm problems, such as Torsades de Pointes. Symptoms may include a fast or irregular heartbeat, severe dizziness, or fainting.

• Hypersensitivity Reactions: Though rare, a severe allergic reaction to Blexten is possible. Symptoms of a severe allergic reaction may include a rash, hives, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue, and difficulty breathing.

• Central Nervous System Effects: While not a common side effect, some individuals may experience syncope (fainting), which can be a sign of a more serious underlying issue. Other CNS effects, such as nervousness or anxiety, have also been reported.

Blexten Precautions

Before starting Blexten, it is essential to have a thorough discussion with your healthcare provider about your medical history and any other medications you are taking. Blexten is contraindicated in patients with a history of QT prolongation and/or Torsades de Pointes, including congenital long QT syndromes. It should also be used with caution in individuals with other risk factors for heart rhythm problems, such as a history of cardiac arrhythmias, low potassium or magnesium levels, or a family history of sudden cardiac death. It is crucial to avoid taking Blexten with food or fruit juices, as this can significantly decrease its absorption and effectiveness. You should also inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any other medications, particularly P-glycoprotein inhibitors (such as ketoconazole, erythromycin, diltiazem, or cyclosporine), as these can increase the plasma concentration of bilastine and the risk of side effects. This is especially important for patients with moderate to severe kidney impairment.

While Blexten is generally considered non-sedating, some individuals may still experience dizziness or drowsiness. It is essential to know how the medication affects you before driving or operating heavy machinery. Studies have shown that bilastine does not potentiate the effects of alcohol, but patients should still exercise caution.

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you should discuss the use of Blexten with your doctor. The official product monograph recommends avoiding use during pregnancy and while breastfeeding unless clearly necessary, as there are no adequate and well-controlled studies. It is not known if bilastine is excreted in breast milk. Blexten is approved for use in adults and children 12 years of age and older for tablets and in children 4 to 11 years of age for oral solutions and orally disintegrating tablets. It is not recommended for children under 4 years of age or weighing less than 16 kg.
