Cabtreo Gel (Clindamycin phosphate/adapalene/benzoyl peroxide) Information
Cabtreo Gel, which contains the active ingredient clindamycin phosphate/adapalene/benzoyl peroxide, is a prescription topical gel used for the treatment of acne vulgaris in adults and pediatric patients aged 12 years and older. It is a triple-combination acne treatment that is applied as a thin layer to the entire affected area of the face or body once daily. Because it contains multiple potent ingredients, it simplifies the acne regimen by replacing the need for multiple separate products.
The mechanism of action involves a three-pronged approach to target the different causes of acne. Clindamycin phosphate is a lincosamide antibiotic that stops the growth of acne-causing bacteria and reduces inflammation. Adapalene is a retinoid that regulates skin cell turnover to prevent pores from becoming clogged and treats existing comedones (blackheads and whiteheads). Benzoyl peroxide is an antimicrobial agent that kills bacteria on the skin and helps to dry out and peel away dead skin cells.
Cabtreo Gel Side Effects
Cabtreo Gel is generally well-tolerated, but common side effects may occur at the site of application. Commonly reported effects include skin redness, scaling, dryness, stinging, and burning. These reactions are usually most common during the first few weeks of treatment as the skin adjusts.
More serious side effects can occur and require immediate medical attention. Stop taking the medication and seek help if you experience:
• Colitis (Severe Diarrhea): Since clindamycin is absorbed through the skin, it can rarely cause severe watery or bloody diarrhea and stomach cramps.
• Severe Allergic Reactions: Symptoms like hives, swelling of the face or throat, or difficulty breathing (often related to benzoyl peroxide).
• Severe Skin Irritation: Intense swelling, blistering, or crusting of the skin.
Cabtreo Gel Precautions
Do not use Cabtreo Gel if you have a known allergy to clindamycin phosphate, adapalene, benzoyl peroxide, or any of the inactive ingredients in the medication. Before starting treatment, inform your doctor of your complete medical history, especially if you have a history of colitis or Crohn's disease, eczema, or sunburn.
Tell your doctor about all medications you are taking, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Cabtreo Gel has interactions with many drugs, especially with topical antibiotics or products containing erythromycin. Avoid using other abrasive soaps, "medicated" cleansers, or products with high concentrations of alcohol or astringents, as these can increase skin irritation.
Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. There is limited data on the use of Cabtreo Gel in pregnant women. It is generally recommended to avoid topical retinoids, such as adapalene, during pregnancy unless necessary. It is unknown if the ingredients in Cabtreo Gel pass into breast milk in significant amounts. To minimize risk, do not apply the gel to the nipple or areola, as this may prevent the infant from direct contact or ingestion.
Use Cabtreo Gel exactly as your doctor tells you. Wash the skin with a mild soap, and pat dry before applying a pea-sized amount to the face. Wash your hands immediately after use. Cabtreo makes your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen and wear protective clothing daily. Because it contains benzoyl peroxide, the gel can bleach or discolor hair, towels, and clothing. Store at room temperature at or below 25°C. Do not freeze after dispensing. Discard any unused gel 10 weeks after it was first dispensed or when the expiration date is reached, whichever comes first.
