Campral Information

Campral (Acamprosate) is specifically used to reduce craving for alcohol and maintain abstinence in individuals with alcohol dependence who have already undergone detoxification. It is typically used along with counselling and behavioral therapies to treat alcohol dependence. Campral, which contains the active ingredient acamprosate calcium, belongs to the class of medications known as GABA-ergic agents or NMDA receptor modulators.

In individuals with alcohol dependence, heavy consumption alters the brain’s chemical balance, specifically the equilibrium between the inhibitory GABA system and the excitatory glutamate system. When these individuals stop drinking, the brain remains in a hyper-excited state, which often manifests as high cravings and eventually the withdrawal symptoms such as anxiety, insomnia, and a physical sense of unease that frequently drives a person back to alcohol. Acamprosate appears to work by stabilizing these neurochemical imbalances, which in turn helps reduce the cravings and psychological distress that often lead to relapse. It is most effective when integrated into a broader recovery program, acting not as a cure, but as a physiological support to help the patient remain sober while they engage in behavioral therapy.

Campral Side Effects

Though all medications can cause side effects, most are mild and temporary. Some common side effects of this medication include abdominal pain, appetite changes, change in sexual desire or abilities, diarrhea, dry mouth, itchy skin, nausea, skin rash, vomiting, and weight gain or loss. Campral Precautions

Although it isn't a sedative, Campral may still impair coordination and motor skills in some people. The safety of Campral during pregnancy hasn't been fully established in humans, and animal studies have shown some potential for harm to the fetus. It is also known to pass into breast milk, so it is generally avoided for women who are nursing. While acamprosate rarely interacts with other medications as the liver’s enzyme system doesn't process it and doesn't bind to proteins in the blood, it is still important to inform your doctor about any other medications you are currently taking, including herbal medicines and supplements, to determine if it is safe to use along with acamprosate.

To use Campral correctly, you must first complete the detoxification process and stop drinking alcohol entirely. You must swallow the tablets whole without crushing, chewing, or breaking them. Maintain this consistent schedule even if you feel your cravings have vanished or if you experience a brief relapse.
