Carafate Suspension Information
Carafate Suspension (Sucralfate) is used for short-term treatment of active duodenal ulcer and to prevent its recurrence. An active duodenal ulcer is an open sore on the duodenal lining, the first part of the small intestine. It is a type of peptic ulcer, commonly caused by H. pylori bacteria or long-term use of NSAIDs like aspirin. Symptoms can include dull or burning pain in the upper abdomen, nausea, and a feeling of fullness, while more severe cases can lead to vomiting blood or black, tarry stools. Carafate Suspension is also used off-label to treat stomach ulcers, gastritis, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Mucosal protective agents like Sucralfate form a gel-like barrier that adheres directly to the ulcer surface and the damaged or inflamed lining of the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum. This barrier shields the ulcer from further damage by the stomach acid and digestive enzymes, allowing the tissue to heal.
