Celluvisc Eye Drops (Carboxymethylcellulose) Information
Celluvisc (carboxymethylcellulose sodium) is a lubricating ophthalmic solution classified as an artificial tear. It is typically formulated at a 1.0% carboxymethylcellulose sodium concentration in preservative-free, single-use vials, making it ideal for individuals with sensitive eyes or those who use artificial tears frequently. It is indicated for the temporary relief of burning, irritation, and discomfort due to ocular dryness or exposure to wind or sun. Celluvisc is a high-viscosity, gel-like formulation, which means the drop is thicker and stays on the eye surface longer, providing extended lubrication and comfort for people with more severe or chronic dry eye symptoms.
The mechanism of action for carboxymethylcellulose is purely mechanical and lubricating. CMC is a cellulose derivative that works by increasing the viscosity (thickness) of the fluid on the eye's surface. When applied, the solution forms a protective, moisture-retaining layer that mimics the properties of natural tears. This layer lubricates the eye, reduces friction between the eyelid and the cornea/conjunctiva, and helps maintain the integrity of the ocular surface. As a non-pharmacological agent, CMC does not interact with cell receptors or biological pathways; its effect is entirely based on its physical presence as a protective shield and lubricant. The ingredient is not absorbed into the body, ensuring a local-only effect.
Celluvisc Eye Drops Side Effects
As an inert lubricant, Celluvisc is generally safe and causes few side effects, which are entirely localized to the eye. Common side effects are typically mild and transient, including minor stinging or irritation upon application, often due to the physical presence of the drop. Other frequent effects are temporary blurred vision immediately after instillation due to the drops' high viscosity, a mild sensation of having a sticky residue, matting or crusting of the eyelashes or eyelids, or increased tear production (watering of the eyes). These effects usually clear rapidly as the product spreads across the eye.
However, more serious side effects are infrequent, given that Celluvisc is preservative-free and non-pharmacological. Suppose any of the following symptoms are experienced. In that case, the patient should stop using the drops and consult an eye care professional:
• Allergic Hypersensitivity: An infrequent reaction to an excipient (non-active ingredient) characterized by marked swelling of the eyelids or face, or an acute, spreading skin rash.
• Persistent Ocular Pain: Severe or persistent eye pain that worsens or does not improve.
• Vision Disturbances (Prolonged): Any significant or persistent blurring of vision or severe changes in visual acuity that last longer than a few minutes after application.
• Worsening Condition: Continued redness or irritation of the eye that worsens or persists for more than 72 hours.
Celluvisc Eye Drops Precautions
Celluvisc is for ophthalmic use only and must not be swallowed. Keep the product out of reach of children. If swallowed, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center right away. To prevent contamination of the solution, care must be taken to avoid touching the eye, eyelid, or any other surface with the tip of the single-use container. Users should be instructed to discard single-use vials immediately after use, even if some solution remains, to prevent contamination, as the product does not contain a preservative. If the eye solution changes colour or becomes cloudy, it should not be used. Patients should remove contact lenses before instilling Celluvisc, as the high viscosity can coat the lenses, causing significant discomfort or prolonged blurred vision; contact lenses may be reinserted after approximately 15 minutes. A healthcare professional must be consulted immediately if eye pain, changes in vision, or continued redness or irritation of the eye are experienced, or if the condition worsens or persists for more than 72 hours.
