Clindoxyl Gel Information

Clindoxyl Gel (clindamycin phosphate and benzoyl peroxide) is a topical medication used to treat acne vulgaris. It is a combination product that contains two active ingredients with different mechanisms of action. Clindamycin is a lincosamide antibiotic that works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, targeting Cutibacterium acnes, a bacterium associated with the development of acne. Benzoyl peroxide is a topical keratolytic and antiseptic agent. It is believed to work by introducing oxygen into the pores, which creates an environment where P. acnes bacteria cannot survive. Benzoyl peroxide also helps to reduce inflammation and promotes the shedding of dead skin cells, which can prevent pores from becoming clogged.

Clindoxyl Gel Side Effects

The most common side effects of Clindoxyl Gel are generally localized to the area of application on the skin. They may include erythema (redness), peeling, dryness, and a burning sensation. You may also experience increased skin sensitivity to sunlight (photosensitivity). These effects are often most pronounced at the beginning of treatment and may subside with continued use. More serious, though rare, side effects can occur. Call your doctor right away if you experience any of the serious side effects, such as:
• Gastrointestinal effects: Severe colitis (including pseudomembranous colitis), which may be fatal. This can occur with topical clindamycin and has been reported with this medication. If significant diarrhea occurs, the drug should be discontinued immediately.
• Hypersensitivity reactions: Severe allergic reactions, although rare, may include rash, hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, or tongue.
• Severe Skin Irritation: Severe redness, stinging, or peeling that does not improve or worsen with continued use.

Clindoxyl Gel Precautions

Do not use Clindoxyl Gel if you have a history of hypersensitivity to clindamycin, lincomycin, benzoyl peroxide, or any of the product's other ingredients. Clindoxyl Gel is for external use only. Avoid contact with the eyes, mouth, lips, or other mucous membranes. If contact occurs, rinse the area with large amounts of cool tap water. Use with caution in patients with a history of regional enteritis, ulcerative colitis, or antibiotic-associated colitis.

Inform your doctor about all your medications, including prescription, OTC, and herbal supplements. Clindamycin has neuromuscular blocking properties and may enhance the effects of other neuromuscular blocking agents. Use with caution in patients receiving such agents. Cross-resistance between clindamycin and erythromycin has been demonstrated.

Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Clindoxyl Gel is classified as Pregnancy Category C. Animal reproduction studies have not been conducted with the combination product. Clindamycin is Pregnancy Category B, and benzoyl peroxide is Pregnancy Category C. It is not known whether topical clindamycin is excreted in human milk, but orally and parenterally administered clindamycin has been reported to appear in breast milk. A decision should be made whether to discontinue nursing or discontinue the drug, considering the importance of the drug to the mother.

Use your medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Apply a thin film of Clindoxyl Gel to the affected areas once or twice daily, as directed. Keep the container tightly closed and store at room temperature, protected from direct sunlight and heat. Keep all medicines out of reach of children. Benzoyl peroxide is known to bleach hair and fabrics. Avoid putting the product in contact with clothing, towels, and bed linens.
