Colace Information

Colace (Docusate Sodium) is widely used to prevent or treat occasional constipation, particularly when straining during bowel movements should be avoided, such as following surgery or childbirth. The primary active ingredient is docusate sodium, a stool softener (also known as an emollient laxative). Unlike stimulant laxatives that force the bowel muscles to contract, docusate sodium works more subtly. It acts as a surfactant, effectively lowering the surface tension of the stool. This allows water and lipids (fats) to penetrate the waste material more easily. The result is a softer stool that is easier to pass. Because of this mechanism, it may take 12 to 72 hours to produce a bowel movement, so it isn't the best choice for immediate relief of acute, symptomatic constipation.

Constipation is a condition characterized by infrequent bowel movements or the difficult passage of stools that are typically hard and dry. This often happens when the colon absorbs too much water from the waste, or when colon muscle contractions are slow. By facilitating the entry of water into the stool, Colace softens the hard stool mass, making it more pliable. This is particularly beneficial in conditions like hemorrhoids or anal fissures, where passing hard waste would cause significant pain or physical trauma to the delicate anal tissues.

Colace Side Effects

Common mild side effects of this medication include diarrhea, skin rash, stomach or intestinal cramping, and throat irritation (with oral drops). Contact your doctor if these mild side effects persist or worsen.

Stop taking this medicine and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any serious side effects, including allergic reactions such as breathing difficulties, body itching, body rash, skin blistering, swelling of the face, mouth, tongue, lips, or throat. Rare but serious side effects can also include severe dizziness or persistent vomiting. Inform your doctor about any other side effects you notice that are not listed here.

Colace Precautions

Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to docusate or any other ingredients in Colace. Before using this medication, ensure you inform your doctor about any medical conditions you previously or currently have, including the following:
• Abdominal problems such as appendicitis, intestinal obstruction, and gastrointestinal bleeding;
• Diabetes (if using sweetened syrups);
• Electrolyte imbalances;
• Heart disease;
• High blood pressure;
• Rectal bleeding of unknown cause

Do not use Colace for more than seven consecutive days unless specifically directed by a doctor. Prolonged use may result in a loss of normal bowel function or dependency on laxatives for regularity. This medication is generally considered safe to use during pregnancy and while breastfeeding, as it remains mostly in the digestive tract and is only minimally absorbed into the bloodstream; it is unlikely to affect a developing fetus or a breastfed infant. This medication is not recommended for use in children younger than 2 years unless advised by a pediatrician.

Combining Colace with stimulant laxatives (like Senna) is common but should be done under guidance, as it can increase the risk of cramping or electrolyte imbalance. Docusate sodium acts as a surfactant, which can cause your body to absorb mineral oil rather than letting it pass through. This can lead to systemic lipid granulomas (inflammation in the liver, spleen, and lymph nodes). Therefore, before using Colace, it is important to inform your doctor of any other medications you are currently taking, including herbal products and supplements, to determine whether it is safe to use with docusate.

This over-the-counter medication is available as oral drops and capsules. Swallow the capsules whole with water or fruit juice as directed by your doctor. For the oral drops, take them with 120 mL of milk or fruit juice, or mix them into infant formula to mask the bitter taste. Measure each dose of the syrup or drops using the provided oral syringe or dropper to ensure accuracy. Check the leaflet in the medication pack for more usage details. Do not use other medications within 2 hours of taking Colace. Also, avoid prolonged use of this medication. Call your doctor if your symptoms do not improve after 7 days, or if you have not had a bowel movement after 72 hours. Store this medication at room temperature, protect it from light and moisture, and keep it out of the reach of children.
