Colyte Information

Colyte (Polyethylene Glycol 3350/Potassium Chloride/Sodium Bicarbonate/Sodium Chloride/Sodium Sulfate) is used for bowel cleansing prior to examination (e.g. colonoscopy) or surgical procedures requiring a clean colon. Colyte is sometimes also used for the treatment of constipation following consultation with your doctor. The polyethylene glycol binds to the water and helps laxation. The electrolytes help maintain the salt balance in this process. Colyte is available as Powder for Reconstitution per 4L in dosage of 857.69 mg/10.65 mg/24.02 mg/20.87 mg/81.2 mg.

Colyte Side Effects

The most common side effects of Colyte may include abdominal fullness, diarrhea, bloating, nausea, cramping, gas, stomach pain, anal irritation, vomiting, trouble sleeping, more hungry. Call your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Black, tarry, or bloody stools;
• Bleeding from rectum or rectal pain;
• Dehydration (dizziness, tiredness or weakness, or difficulty to pass urine);
• Lack of blood flow to intestines with symptoms such as severe abdominal pain, rectal bleeding;
• Signs of an allergic reaction, like rash, hives, itching, red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin with or without fever;
• Swelling of belly;
• Throwing up blood or throw up that looks like coffee grounds;
• Very bad headache

Colyte Precautions

Do not use Colyte if you are allergic to any ingredients in this medication or if you have ileus (blockage in the bowel); gastric retention; bowel perforation; gastrointestinal obstruction; inflamed large bowel with damage to the intestinal wall; acute swelling of the large bowel. Before you start taking this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history, including if you have taken any other medication within two hours of when you plan to start taking Colyte; if you have a history of electrolyte imbalance (hyponatremia) or are using diuretics; have ulcerative colitis or any other inflammatory bowel disease; are pregnant or nursing; have difficulty swallowing or are prone to vomiting; have problems with your heart such as an abnormal electrical signal, an arrhythmia that is not under control, a recent heart attack, heart failure; have kidney or heart problems. Contact your doctor if while taking Colyte, you develop severe bloating, abdominal pain or distension. Do not take this medication if you have abdominal pain, nausea or vomiting and contact your doctor. Tell your doctor about all the medications you take including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements and vitamins. Oral medications taken within 2 hours of the start of administration of Colyte may be flushed from the gastrointestinal tract and not absorbed. Colyte may interact with stimulant laxatives (e.g. bisacodyl). Stop taking Colyte and seek medical help if you experience severe abdominal pain or rectal bleeding. Children and patients over the age of 60 should use Colyte with care as they may be more sensitive to the side effects of this drug, especially dehydration.
