Cotazym Information

Cotazym (Lipase/Protease/Amylase) is primarily used to treat exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, a condition where the pancreas does not make enough enzymes necessary for digestion. This often arises from conditions such as cystic fibrosis, chronic pancreatitis, or pancreatic surgery, including partial or total pancreatectomy. In patients with exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, the absence of endogenous pancreatic enzymes such as lipase, amylase, and protease prevents proper digestion of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates, typically leading to malnutrition, weight loss, and painful gastrointestinal symptoms, including steatorrhea (oily stools).

Its active ingredient is pancrelipase, a porcine-derived extract that contains a concentrated mixture of digestive enzymes, including lipase, protease, and amylase. Being a form of pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy, Cotazym works by directly replacing the missing digestive enzymes required to break down macronutrients in the small intestine. When this medication is taken with meals, it mimics the natural digestive process, allowing the body to break down food into absorbable nutrients. It contains a special enteric coating, which is designed to protect the enzymes from being destroyed by your stomach acid so they can reach the small intestine where they actually do their work. Its actions lead to a significant improvement in the patient’s nutritional status and a reduction in distressing symptoms associated with poor food absorption.

Cotazym Side Effects

Like other medications, Cotazym can cause side effects, most of which are related to the digestive tract, where it exerts its effects. Common side effects include mild stomach pain, bloating, constipation, frequent bowel movements, dizziness, nausea, sore throat, cough, and vomiting. Contact your doctor if these mild side effects persist or worsen.

Stop taking this medicine and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any serious side effects, including the following:
• Allergic reactions such as breathing difficulties, body itching, body rash, skin blistering, swelling of the face, mouth, tongue, lips, or throat;
• High blood uric acid levels (hyperuricemia), including pain, stiffness, redness, or swelling of your joints;
• Irritation around the inside of the mouth and the anal area;
• Signs of viral infection such as fever, chills, sore throat;
• Symptoms of high blood sugar, such as frequent urination, increased thirst;
• Symptoms of low blood sugar, such as cold sweat, cool, pale skin, and headache

Inform your doctor about any other side effects you notice that are not listed here.

Cotazym Precautions

Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to pancrelipase, pig-derived substances, or any other ingredients in Cotazym. Before using this medication, ensure you inform your doctor about any medical conditions you previously or currently have, including the following:
• Acute pancreatitis;
• Bowel problems such as blocked intestines;
• Diabetes;
• Difficulty swallowing;
• Gout;
• High blood uric acid;
• Kidney disease

It's essential to drink adequate water to stay hydrated while taking Cotazym to help prevent chronic constipation. Since the active ingredient, pancrelipase, acts locally in the gut and isn't significantly absorbed into the body, it is generally thought that the fetus is not exposed to the drug. Also, because the enzymes don't enter the mother's bloodstream in significant amounts, they aren't expected to pass into breast milk. However, consult your doctor before taking this medication during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, to determine if it is suitable for you.

Pancrelipase can actually interfere with your body's ability to absorb iron and folic acid. If you’re taking iron for anemia, your doctor might need to monitor your levels more closely or adjust the timing of your doses. Inform your healthcare provider about all the medicines, including herbal supplements and over-the-counter medications, that you are taking before starting Cotazym to prevent potential drug interactions.

Swallow each Cotazym capsule whole with a full glass of water or juice during every meal or snack. You must avoid crushing or chewing the granules, as the enzymes can irritate the mouth and lose their effectiveness in the stomach's acid. If you have difficulty swallowing, you may sprinkle the capsule contents onto a small amount of acidic soft food, such as applesauce. Consume this mixture immediately without chewing and follow it with a drink to ensure you swallow all the medicine. Always follow the specific dosage your doctor prescribed, as it is tailored to your particular diet and fat intake. Store the bottle at room temperature in a dry place, keeping it away from high heat or moisture.
