Cyklokapron Information

Cyklokapron (Tranexamic Acid) is mainly used to treat or prevent excessive bleeding in different medical situations, including heavy menstrual bleeding, nosebleeds, bleeding after surgery (such as dental extractions, heart, or orthopedic surgery), and bleeding linked to conditions like hemophilia or trauma. It is also used in the treatment of hereditary angioedema, a condition that causes swelling under the skin. Its active ingredient, tranexamic acid, belongs to the class of drugs called antifibrinolytics. The body naturally uses blood clots to stop bleeding. Still, in some people or situations, the body breaks these clots down too quickly, leading to prolonged or severe blood loss. This phenomenon can occur in hemophilia, where patients lack clotting factors, or in women with heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia), where clots dissolve faster than normal and bleeding becomes heavy and prolonged. Tranexamic acid works by blocking plasmin, an enzyme responsible for clot breakdown, so the clot remains longer and bleeding is reduced. Unlike medicines that make new clots, it simply preserves the ones already formed.

Cyklokapron Side Effects

Some mild side effects of this medicine include diarrhea, dizziness, nausea, and vomiting. Contact your doctor if these mild side effects persist or worsen. Stop taking this medicine and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any serious side effects, including the following:
• Allergic reactions such as breathing difficulties, hives, swelling of the face, lips, or throat;
• Abnormal vision changes;
• Blood clot in blood vessels with symptoms like difficulty breathing, pain, and swelling in one leg muscle;
• Heart attack with symptoms like chest pain or pressure, pain extending through the shoulder and arm, nausea and vomiting, sweating;
• Seizures;
• Severe dizziness, especially with changes in posture;
• Stroke with symptoms like sudden or severe headache, sudden slurring of speech, or unexplained weakness, numbness, or pain in an arm or leg;
• Trouble urinating

Cyklokapron Precautions

Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to tranexamic acid, the inactive ingredients in Cyklokapron, or any other medicine. Before using this medication, ensure you inform your doctor about any medical conditions you previously or currently have, including the following:
• Blood clot disorders, including a history of pulmonary embolism or deep venous thrombosis;
• Blood in urine;
• Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC);
• Eye problems;
• Irregular periods;
• Kidney disease;
• Seizure disorders;
• Subarachnoid haemorrhage (brain bleeds)

Do not drive or operate machinery until you have determined how this medication affects you, as it can cause dizziness. Consult your doctor before taking this medicine if you are taking hormonal birth control pills to assess the benefits and risks of using this medication, due to the risk of developing blood clots. Consult your doctor before using this medication during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Tranexamic acid may interact with other medicines or substances, such as fibrinolytic drugs (such as streptokinase), estrogen, tibolone, and tretinoin. Therefore, inform your healthcare provider about all the medicines, including herbal supplements, that you are taking before using Cyklokapron to prevent potential drug interactions.

This medicine is available only in tablet form for oral use as directed by your doctor or as stated in the medication pack. Swallow the tablets whole and avoid chewing or crushing them.
