Dovato Information
Dovato is a complete regimen for the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection in adults who are new to antiretroviral therapy and have no known resistance to the individual components of the medication. It is a single-tablet regimen containing two active ingredients: dolutegravir and lamivudine. Dolutegravir is an integrase strand transfer inhibitor (INSTI), while lamivudine is a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI). These two antiretroviral agents work together to inhibit the activity of key viral enzymes (integrase and reverse transcriptase) that HIV needs to replicate. By suppressing viral replication, Dovato helps to reduce the viral load and allows the immune system to recover.
Dovato Side Effects
The most common side effects of Dovato may include headache, nausea, diarrhea, and insomnia. Call your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects, such as:
• Hypersensitivity reactions: Severe allergic reactions with symptoms like rash, fever, and organ dysfunction.
• Liver problems: Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), dark urine, light-colored stools, or persistent nausea and vomiting.
• Mental health changes: Severe depression, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts.
• Neural tube defects: Increased risk in infants born to women who used dolutegravir at the time of conception.
• Post-treatment exacerbation of Hepatitis B: Severe, acute flare-ups of Hepatitis B in patients co-infected with HIV-1 and HBV after stopping lamivudine.
Dovato Precautions
Do not use Dovato if you are allergic to dolutegravir, lamivudine, or any of its ingredients. Do not use Dovato if you are taking dofetilide, as this can lead to a significant increase in dofetilide concentrations and potentially life-threatening arrhythmias. This medication has a boxed warning for post-treatment acute exacerbation of Hepatitis B in patients co-infected with HIV-1 and HBV. It is essential to test for Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection before starting treatment with Dovato. Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins.
Dovato can interact with several medications. Certain antacids, laxatives, and supplements containing polyvalent cations (e.g., magnesium, calcium, aluminum, and iron) can significantly decrease the absorption of dolutegravir. To avoid this, take Dovato at least 2 hours before or 6 hours after taking these products. Rifampin can also considerably reduce the concentration of dolutegravir, so an alternative regimen or dosage adjustment may be needed.
Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. There is a warning about the increased risk of neural tube defects in infants born to women who used dolutegravir at the time of conception. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed. HIV-infected mothers should not breastfeed their infants to avoid the risk of transmitting HIV.
Use your medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Dovato is a single tablet typically taken once daily with or without food. It is crucial to take the pill consistently at the same time each day. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose. Do not take two doses at the same time. Store Dovato in its original container at room temperature, protected from moisture. Keep all medicines out of reach of children.
