Ella Information
Ella (Ulipristal Acetate) is used as an emergency contraceptive to help prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex or a known failure of regular birth control method, such as a broken condom or missed pills. The active ingredient is ulipristal acetate, which belongs to the class of medications called selective progesterone receptor modulator. These drugs interact with the body's progesterone receptors in a way that temporarily blocks or alters the hormone's effects. In the context of emergency contraception, ulipristal primarily works by delaying or preventing ovulation. If no egg is released, fertilization cannot occur. Ulipristal appears to be more effective than over-the-counter options, such as levonorgestrel, especially when taken early enough. Its strength lies in its ability to delay ovulation even when the luteinizing hormone surge has already begun, a stage when other emergency contraceptives are less reliable. It's imperative to note that ulipristal acetate should only be used as emergency contraception and not as a regular birth control method. It does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.
