Elocom Information
Elocom (mometasone furoate) is a topical corticosteroid used to treat a variety of inflammatory and pruritic (itchy) skin conditions that are responsive to corticosteroids. These conditions include psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, and allergic contact dermatitis. Mometasone furoate is a medium- to high-potency corticosteroid that works by suppressing the immune response and reducing inflammation, redness, and swelling in the skin. It does this by inhibiting the release of chemicals that cause inflammation. Elocom is available in various formulations, such as creams, ointments, and lotions, to suit different skin conditions and treatment areas.
Elocom Side Effects
The most common side effects of Elocom are generally localized to the application site. They may include burning, itching, skin atrophy (thinning), and stinging. These are typically mild and temporary. Long-term or excessive use of this medication can increase the risk of more serious side effects.
Less common but notable side effects include:
• Paresthesia: A tingling or prickling sensation.
• Acneiform eruptions: The appearance of acne-like breakouts.
• Hypopigmentation: A lightening of the skin in the treated area. This is a significant side effect to mention for patients with darker skin tones.
Call your doctor right away if you experience any of the serious side effects, such as:
• Adrenal Suppression: Although rare, especially with prolonged use, application to large areas, or under occlusive dressings, enough medication may be absorbed into the bloodstream to cause adrenal suppression. This can lead to symptoms like fatigue, weight loss, or low blood pressure.
• Cushing's Syndrome: Prolonged use can, in rare cases, lead to Cushing's syndrome, with symptoms such as a rounded face, weight gain, and muscle weakness.
• Skin Changes: Long-term use can lead to permanent skin changes, including thinning, stretch marks (striae), or telangiectasias (dilated blood vessels).
• Ophthalmologic effects: If applied near the eyes, it can cause glaucoma or cataracts.
• Infections: Topical corticosteroids may mask or aggravate skin infections.
Elocom Precautions
Do not use Elocom if you are allergic to mometasone furoate or any of the product's other ingredients. Elocom is for external use only. Avoid contact with the eyes, mouth, and other mucous membranes. It should not be used on facial rosacea, perioral dermatitis, or skin infections caused by fungi, viruses, or bacteria that have not been adequately treated. Using a potent corticosteroid on these conditions can worsen them significantly. Do not use this medication for prolonged periods or on large areas of the body unless directed by a doctor, as this increases the risk of systemic side effects. It is not for use in children under 2 years of age.
Inform your doctor about all your medications, including prescription, OTC, and herbal supplements. Elocom can interact with other topical medications containing corticosteroids.
Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Elocom is classified as Pregnancy Category C. There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. It should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefits outweigh the possible risks to the fetus. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding. It is not known whether topical administration of corticosteroids could result in sufficient systemic absorption to produce detectable quantities in human milk.
