Entresto Information

Entresto (Sacubitril/Valsartan) is primarily used to treat chronic heart failure in adults. It is used to reduce the risk of hospitalization and sudden cardiac death. It is typically prescribed for adults and children 1 year and above with a reduced ejection fraction. Entresto is a unique medication in that it is the first in a class of drugs known as an angiotensin receptor-neprilysin Inhibitor. It contains two active ingredients: sacubitril and valsartan.

Valsartan is an angiotensin receptor blocker that works by blocking the receptor for angiotensin II, which effectively relaxes the blood vessels and reduces the heart's workload. Sacubitril is a neprilysin inhibitor. Neprilysin is an enzyme that breaks down natriuretic peptides, which are substances that promote vasodilation (widening of blood vessels) and help the kidneys excrete excess sodium and fluid. By inhibiting neprilysin, sacubitril essentially boosts the levels of these protective peptides, providing a counter-regulatory force to the stress of heart failure.

This dual approach is superior to first-line medications like ACE inhibitors alone in reducing the risk of cardiovascular death and hospitalizations related to chronic and severe heart failure.
