Erdotin Information

Erdotin (Erdosteine) is primarily used for the symptomatic treatment of acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, a form of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. In this condition, there is long-term inflammation of the airways, which results in a persistent cough and excessive, thick mucus production that clogs the airways and causes discomfort. Erdotin is a mucolytic typically used for short, severe flare-ups or acute exacerbations of this condition to clear the airways and make breathing easier. It is also used as a cough expectorant, helping to clear mucus from the airways in other respiratory conditions that cause excessive sputum and mucus production, such as cystic fibrosis.

Erdosteine, a prodrug, is converted into active metabolites that contain free sulfhydryl groups. These groups chemically break disulfide bonds within mucus glycoproteins in the respiratory airways, effectively reducing mucus viscosity and elasticity. This action makes it less sticky and easier to cough out of the lungs, and also makes breathing easier. Also, it appears to possess antioxidant properties, helping reduce inflammation and damage in the respiratory tract (a process known to drive mucus production).
