Estraderm (Estradiol) Information
Estraderm, which contains the active ingredient estradiol, is a potent naturally occurring estrogen hormone replacement therapy (HRT). It is most commonly prescribed for the relief of moderate to severe vasomotor symptoms (such as hot flashes and night sweats) and vulvovaginal atrophy associated with menopause. Additionally, it is used for the prevention of postmenopausal osteoporosis in women who are at high risk for bone fractures and for whom non-estrogen medications are not considered appropriate.
The mechanism of action involves replacing the declining levels of the natural hormone estrogen produced by the ovaries during menopause. It binds to estrogen receptors in target tissues, including the reproductive tract, breasts, pituitary gland, hypothalamus, and bones. This process helps regulate the body's temperature-regulating center, maintains the integrity of vaginal tissues, and slows bone resorption, helping preserve bone density and prevent fractures.
Estraderm Side Effects
Estraderm is generally well-tolerated, but common side effects may occur as your body adjusts to the medication.
Common side effects of Estraderm may include application site reactions (such as redness, itching, or irritation from the adhesive), breast tenderness or pain, headache, nausea, abdominal cramps, unexpected spotting or breakthrough bleeding, and mild discomfort or changes in fit while wearing contact lenses. Some patients may notice mild fluid retention or minor weight fluctuations.
Contact your doctor immediately if you have any of the serious side effects that include:
• A significant and sustained rise in blood pressure (hypertension).
• Changes in vision, such as sudden blurred or partial vision loss.
• New or unusual lumps discovered during routine breast self-exams.
• Signs of a blood clot include sudden shortness of breath, sharp chest pain, coughing up blood, or painful swelling and warmth in one leg.
• Signs of a stroke or heart attack, such as sudden severe headache, slurred speech, numbness or weakness in the face or limbs, or sudden chest pressure.
• Signs of liver problems, such as yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), dark urine, or severe abdominal pain.
Precautions:
Do not use Estraderm if you have a known hypersensitivity to estradiol or any of the components in the patch adhesive.
Tell your doctor about your medical history and if you have:
• Active or past blood clots (DVT or pulmonary embolism).
• History of breast cancer, endometrial cancer, or other estrogen-dependent cancers.
• Known or suspected pregnancy.
• Liver disease or impaired liver function.
• Recent heart attack or stroke.
• Undiagnosed abnormal vaginal bleeding.
Because Estraderm is absorbed through the skin into the bloodstream, it bypasses the liver's initial metabolism (first-pass effect). However, potent liver enzyme inducers (such as carbamazepine, phenobarbital, rifampin, and St. John's Wort) can still increase the clearance of estrogen from your system, potentially reducing Estraderm's clinical effectiveness. Close monitoring by your doctor is recommended if these medications are co-administered. It may also interfere with the effectiveness of thyroid replacement therapy or certain anticoagulants.
Estraderm is contraindicated during pregnancy and should be discontinued immediately if pregnancy is suspected. It is recommended to speak to your doctor immediately if you are planning to get pregnant. Estrogens are secreted into human milk and may reduce the quantity and quality of breast milk. Use during breastfeeding is generally not recommended.
In women with an intact uterus, Estraderm should always be used in conjunction with a progestogen to reduce the risk of endometrial cancer.
Store patches at room temperature (20°C to 25°C) in their original, individual sealed pouches. Do not store patches outside of their pouches, and keep them away from direct sunlight or extreme heat. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
