Eucreas Information

Eucreas (Vildagliptin/Metformin) is a prescription medication used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults, in addition to diet and exercise. It is typically prescribed for patients with type 2 diabetes whose blood glucose levels are not adequately controlled with maximally tolerated doses of metformin or vildagliptin alone. It may be used in combination with specific oral hypoglycemic agents, such as sulfonylureas and insulin. Type 2 diabetes is a chronic condition where the body either doesn't produce enough insulin or doesn't effectively use the insulin it produces, leading to elevated blood sugar levels. Uncontrolled high blood sugar can lead to serious health complications over time, affecting the heart, kidneys, eyes, and nerves.

Eucreas is a fixed-dose combination of oral hypoglycemic drugs: metformin and vildagliptin. Vildagliptin is a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor that enhances the body's natural ability to lower blood glucose. It achieves this by increasing levels of incretin hormones, which then stimulate the pancreas to release more insulin when blood glucose levels are high and reduce the amount of glucose produced by the liver. Metformin, classified as a biguanide, primarily reduces hepatic glucose production and improves insulin sensitivity, thereby allowing cells to take up more glucose from the blood. It also slightly reduces intestinal glucose absorption. Together, these two components lower both fasting and postprandial blood glucose levels, thereby helping individuals with type 2 diabetes achieve better glycemic control and reduce the risk of diabetes-related complications. This medication is not recommended for use in individuals with type 1 diabetes or a life-threatening diabetic emergency called diabetic ketoacidosis.

Eucreas Side Effects

Like all medications, Eucreas may cause some side effects. Common side effects of this medication include sore throat, runny nose, fever, itchy rash, excessive sweating, joint pain, dizziness, headache, uncontrollable tremor, constipation, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, flatulence, heartburn, and mild abdominal pain. Contact your doctor if these mild side effects persist or worsen.

Stop taking this medicine and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any serious side effects, including the following:
• Allergic reactions such as breathing difficulties, body itching, body rash, skin blistering, swelling of the face, mouth, tongue, lips, or throat;
• Anemia (low red blood cells) with symptoms including dizziness, pale skin, unusual tiredness;
• Lactic acidosis with symptoms such as muscle pain, drowsiness, and breathing difficulties;
• Liver problems with symptoms including nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, yellow eyes, and skin;
• Pancreatitis with symptoms such as abdominal pain on the upper left side, back pain, nausea

Eucreas Precautions

Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to vildagliptin, metformin, or any other ingredient in Eucreas. Before using this medication, ensure you inform your doctor about any medical conditions you previously or currently have, including the following:
• Dehydration;
• Drink alcohol excessively;
• Heart disease, such as heart failure;
• Kidney disease;
• Liver disease;
• Low blood pressure;
• Pancreatitis;
• Thyroid disease, such as hypothyroidism;
• Vitamin B12 deficiency

If you are scheduled for surgery or any radiological investigation or procedure that requires the use of a dye, inform your healthcare provider that you are taking this medication, as you may need to withhold this medication for a period. Avoid alcohol or alcoholic beverages while taking this medication, as these substances can cause you to develop side effects such as lactic acidosis. This medication may cause dizziness and drowsiness due to reduced blood sugar; therefore, it is advised that you do not drive or operate machinery until you are sure how it affects you. It is essential to recognize the symptoms of hypoglycemia, including anxiety, sweating, pallor, hunger, and a pounding heart. Take a glucose-containing snack immediately if you experience these symptoms and inform your physician.

Eucreas is generally not recommended for use during pregnancy or while breathing. Consult your doctor if you become pregnant while taking this medication, as it may need to be switched to insulin, which is safer during pregnancy. This medication is not suitable for use in individuals under 18 years of age. This medication should be used with caution in older adults, as they may be more sensitive to its side effects. Some drugs, such as thiazide diuretics, can increase the risk of side effects like lactic acidosis when used along with Eucreas. Therefore, inform your healthcare provider about all the medicines, including herbal supplements and over-the-counter medications, that you are taking before starting Eucreas to prevent potential drug interactions.

Take Eucreas (Vildagliptin/Metformin) tablets twice daily, once in the morning and once in the evening, as directed by your doctor. You should take it with or immediately after food; this reduces common side effects like nausea and diarrhea caused by metformin. Swallow the tablets whole with water; avoid crushing or chewing them. Refer to the leaflets in the medication pack for additional usage instructions. Store this medication at room temperature, protect it from light and moisture, and keep it out of the reach of children.
