Flagyl Information

Flagyl (Metronidazole) is used to treat a wide variety of infections. The oral tablets are used to treat infections caused by bacteria or parasites. These include infections that occur in the gastrointestinal tract or reproductive system such as amebiasis and trichomoniasis. Metronidazole extended-release oral tablets are used to treat vaginal infections in women. Flagyl vaginal cream is used to treat a certain type of vaginal infection (bacterial vaginosis) in females 12 years of age and older. Metronidazole belongs to a class of medications known as antibiotics. This medication works by stopping the growth of certain bacteria and parasites. Flagyl treats only certain bacterial and parasitic infections. It will not work for viral infections (common cold, flu). For the best effect, take this antibiotic at evenly spaced times.

Flagyl Side effects

Taking Flagyl may cause some common side effects such as dizziness, headache, stomach upset, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, diarrhea, constipation, or metallic taste in your mouth may occur. If any of these effects last or get worse, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly. This medication may also cause one’s urine to turn darker in colour which is harmless and will disappear when the medication is stopped. Taking this medication may also cause some serious side effects such as signs of a new infection (such as sore throat that doesn't go away, fever), easy bruising/bleeding, stomach/abdominal pain, painful urination.

Flagyl Precautions

Do not take this medication if you are allergic. This medication should not be used during pregnancy unless it is clearly needed. It also passes into breast milk. Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant or breast-feeding. Before taking this medication, contact your medical health professional if you have a medical history of liver disease, kidney disease, certain blood disorders (low blood cell counts). People with a rare genetic disorder (Cockayne syndrome) may be at risk of a very serious liver disease if they use Metronidazole. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. If Metronidazole is used, your doctor will check your liver function. Get medical help right away if you have any signs of liver disease during treatment (such as nausea/vomiting that doesn't stop, loss of appetite, severe stomach/abdominal pain, yellowing eyes/skin, dark urine). Avoid alcoholic beverages. This drug may make you dizzy. Alcohol or marijuana (cannabis) can make you more dizzy. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs alertness until you can do it safely.

Flagyl Availability

Big Mountain Drugs offers the brand name of Flagyl vaginal cream, manufactured in Canada by Sanofi Aventis. We also carry the brand Flagyl capsules from Canada manufactured by Odan. The generic of Flagyl is not available at this time. Flagyl is available in the dosage of 500 mg capsules and 10%/60gm vaginal cream.
